It's double avoidable, if you have enough Emily points and tell her you don't want her dating John then she won't date him. If you don't have enough points with Emily (because you've been perving on her) and/or you don't mind her dating John but don't want to see it then you can skip the scene when you're talking to Mel.

By hitting skip, you are just skipping over Emily retelling what happened the date to Mel. She still goes on the date and sleeps with John as far as the game is concerned.

Emily has 18 points or so available before the bike check (based on route) and you need 13 for the bike. Of course, Emily has some -4 swings too, so depending on how it goes you could easily end up no bike.
