It's canonical in all my routes, so... She's just too fun not to play around with. Plus, it makes the relationship between her and mom so much more uncomfortable!

She day dreams about fucking the kid she used to babysit, the son of her best friend... Would that qualify?

Even before the perpetual indecision about her hair, she's a person is her mid forties with no relationships, who apparently haven't been gotten any for a while, still thinking about the one guy from her youth and fantasizing about an "innapropriate" relationship, that's textbook wether you like it or not.

Also when was she wild? Melissa likes to joke but the flashbacks show Emily as the wild party girl, while Melissa was the quiet one.

A midlife crisis is something that is stereotypically portrayed as negative(and your insulted reaction tells me you think that as well) but can be a lot of fun if handled correctly.
It's good that Melissa has a conscience that getting it on with the neighbor kid is wrong yet she still desires it, it gives meat to the story.
