It's like asking women why they don't they leave their abusive husbands. Human psyche doesn't work like that unfortunately. All too easy to say suck it up...do this etc when not actually experienced that awful shit and manipulation and shame these assholes put some women through.

Exactly! If blackmail wasn’t effective then it wouldn’t happen. Fact is that the legality of the action isn’t what determines the effectiveness, it is the perceived embarrassment the blackmail would cause. Theoretically Erynn is afraid of the humiliation that any blackmail would cause her because of what people would think of her - family, friends, fellow students, coworkers, future employers, etc.

In the US there was a case of a teacher who had her phone stolen from her by two students, they posted nudes she had on her phone, and she was fired. There are some very puritanical areas of the world where something like that could follow someone forever.

What is so hard to understand about this? Even if Ethan (since we are talking about this game) went to jail for the rest of his life and to to pay erynn millions of dollars in damages the damage would have been done. She could kiss her career as a teacher goodbye.
