frankly I'm shocked they survived this long by doing the same bare minimum game over and over and over again. the things they will be remembered by came out almost two decades ago.

yes it's the end of an era, but also perhaps shutting down was far overdue.

All they needed to do was mix Artificial Academy 2 and Koikatsu.
See we all say this and think it, but OTOH, do we know what the sales numbers were for Artificial Academy 2? Do we know what their customers asked for? Did they do any market research? Did they even have the staff that was able to implement such an idea? If we look at their output over the last 9 years, it would seem they weren't interested in making any sort of games that had improved gameplay.

I feel like they decided to go after a specific audience that they knew who would actually pay for what they were making (boring anime doll creator with extremely marginal gameplay elements, or just no elements)....

Steam is no good, either. While it's certainly more lax than Patreon, it still won't allow many things of the more niche nature.
Shame about Steam, I bought games there like Goblin Walker, Prison Fight etc (now delisted) and they even had a game that was titled The Raped Knight of Sylveria, which then changed to the Noble Knight, then was delisted. There was a shortish years where games with the usual themes were kosher, now they've cracked down and those games there's a weird air of keep it not-too-obvious-ok nowadays.

You can get away with a pixel platformer with chibi-esque artwork where the mc gets plugged by enemies (Libra Heart's succubus series), but if it was high res artwork it might not be allowed.

Shocking news; this should have been one of the most financially secure companies in gaming, considering its status as one of the backbones of the adult sector. Were people not paying the license costs for commercial use of the studio mode, or was none required? In the latter case... WOW that's terrible management. Like no wonder the company went under, if they made such a monumentally bad decision as to let other people make money off their product and not take a cut, particularly when it seems like it's used for that purpose way more than actually played as a game in and of itself.

They tell you explicitly that the studio is for private use only not for commercial things. Either they are clueless about the whole patreon thing or choose to ignore it.

No.

If anything this will impact western developers more, because they are the ones mainly using illusion engine to make games, and since the engine isn't being updated anymore now they will be fully at the mercy of modders.
I wonder if it will be pulled from Steam.

So they just didn't allow it at all, but turned a blind eye to people breaking that rule rather than making any effort to monetize it? Oof, yep, that's about the dumbest thing they could do. All those Patreon/SS devs better get ready for the shakedown coming their way from whatever creditor ends up with the rights. Even if that company isn't interested in "dirty money" from porn and just sits on the IP, somebody's gonna notice there's gold just waiting to be mined and try and buy it from them. (I'd also be worried that once there's an official relationship with money changing hands and everything, content restrictions would come with that - hopefully they'll be as easily gotten around and loosely enforced as Patreon's.)

Basically, they pulled a WinRAR. "Hey, what you are doing is completely not-OK by our standards, but we also won't really do anything about it either. Just letting you know that our feelings are hurt uwu"

Schoolmate 2, Artificial Girl 3 and Artificial Academy was how I first got into 3D eroge. For a long time I looked forward to almost every new Illusion release.

I think if they had just focused on what people wanted rather than go back and forth between anime-esque games (AA2, Koikatsu etc) and copy paste realistic games (Honey Select, Room Girl etc) they would've been better off.

I personally feel like their realistic games were boring and the biggest offenders because the gameplay was completely barebones and there was pretty much no position variety between the games. No one wants to play the same game over and over with a different name and setting. While there wasn't much of a difference between Koikatsu and Koikatsu Sunshine the latter at least offered more position variety. The same can't be said for games like Honey Select, Honey Select 2, Room Girl etc.

Oh well. It's a shame but it is what it is. I'll miss what the company used to be and not what it became.

Maybe they should've tried developing and publishing games to make money.
It's hard to make money selling games you're not really allowed to advertise, to people who'll never admit they played one. Let alone tell their friends. Especially since the one way for word of mouth to spread is via the forums on pirate sites that give the things away for free.

Considering in the last year alone pixiv changed their rules about 6 times... it seems there is some crack down on lewd industry in Japan as a whole. The last 2 or 3 months many of their creators have been banned, people who for years created stuff went to Subscribestar or other Japanese platforms (and yes you can probably guess, many of these creators used modded Illusion games as a base for their pictures). I think Illusion were pressed from someone in Japan to close down. Japan wants again to isolate themselves but because in the era of the Internet it's impossible to really isolate, so they started shutting down their porn game industry... and of course where to start first.... closing Illusion games is a perfect step in that direction.... I expect more "bad news" in the future.

It seems everything which is controversial even slightly in this world will be banned.... we all will be "perfect" and think about sex only when we make children... no more "lewd fantasies" without a "real world partner" and that for only making children allowed *no more sex just for fun. Also considering the number of people who can't make a difference between fantasy and reality is getting bigger every year... there is no good stuff awaiting us any time soon if ever. :(

Neither advertising nor piracy were the problem. Either their target market was too small to recover the costs and/or they failed to deliver a product worthy of the price point they chose to sell it at. Hint: it's both.

It's hard to make money when you're selling a product that doesn't meet market demand. As baneini sarcastically alluded to, maybe they should have realized that continuing to focus on glorified character creation and animation viewers at a high premium price isn't sustainable. What motivation is there to buy the next version?

According to them:
"August 18: ... Sales of Steam products will end"

So probably only those that get the game before then will still be able to play them on steam.
I probably did not see that.
All i have seen is this.

1689523767336.png

The wording was strange. Maybe my english isn't as good.
We are pleased....
really?

Ok, well... i only played it for a short time. I am sure it will work after.
I am not sad but i wish there was something other than DAZ. There seems to be not much competition. At least that i am aware off.

It's a shame. Illusion could just stop making games and focus on their studio software and make a subscription plan for it, a lot of developers would actually buy it if it meant getting a license and being able to put VN's and stuff on Steam etc.
