They had been doing that for like 2 years after the artist and concept creator (Nomo) went basically awol. The last couple of "filler" updates were them doing this, and it still took a LONG time with shit writing.

There's also legal considerations. The current team don't own the copyright to any of the materials, so if Nomo returns and decides to press the issue they'd need to stop and remove from downloads the continuation game at a minimum.

Their own spinoff is even in legally shaky area, since it's still built on the copyright of Nomo and making money off what amounts to fanfiction is (usually) not legal. Most people won't press it, but it is a consideration.

It's most likely not this game, but the side game continuation attempt. The original KoD is dead, and has been for like 2 years now after the artist, original creator, and copyright holder went radio silent. The side game is the hired writer and coder making their own game with some of the assets from KoD.
