I don't disagree with you at all. The point is that ppl are being triggered by characters that are in no way related to the MC: not in the present, past or future. It's like a vegan being triggered over people eating meat simply on account that meat-eating people exist. You are funny
Narrative tool or not, when something gets lambasted pretty universally, maybe, just maybe, it was not the right narrative tool for the job....?
Ever heard the saying "The customer is always right"? That's only one half of it, tho. The full quote is "The customer is always right in matters of taste." IF you aim your game at a specific demographic, you should tailor the game according to their taste. You can find virgins disgusting and love whores with a 1000 cock stare. If you make a game for Harem fans, you need to cater to them because they have the money you want. Either you provide them with a product they want or search for another job.
Game Journos and many AAA publishers learn that right now the hard way. HBO is learning that right now and Neil Cuckmann is relearning it again with The Last of Us 2.
I'm by no means a writer, but I could convey the exact same information to the player without triggering anything like this. It is shockingly easy to do it too.
To be honest, every time something like this happens to a new dev, I am baffled. I can't wrap my head around how new devs do it. I cant even begin to imagine how you can fuck up something, that's clear as day to me, so bad.
I'm not a fan of this kind of stuff either, mind you, but the reaction some ppl are showing is WAY out of proportion.
The stuff you quoted me earlier about the voyeur thing is missing one critical piece of info that I didn't explicitly say in the excerpts you used - the characters that appear to set the narrative tone of the story are not, in anyway, related to the MC. And will never be. It's very different from a character like "Fairy" from Desert Stalker. In fact, there are many things I don't appreciate about that game, but I'm mentioning it because there kind of is some overlap in the tone of Desert Stalker and King's Revolt.
