Hi,
Thanks for taking time to look at this. I'm a male writer working on a game with dual protagonists, one male, one female. My goal is to write characters that interact in a realistic and interesting fashion. My biggest obstacle is my penis. When men like myself try to write female characters we tend to create cliched and 1 dimensional characters. We also tend to either put your sex drive into overdrive or to undersell it (many of the games here are very very guilty of underselling it.) As a result I'd like some perspective on a few minor things.

Firstly, when you're alone how do you refer to your genitals. In your thoughts is it "my vagina" do you think "pussy". I had a friend read my script for my character's masturbation scene and she didn't feel like the word pussy fit. When I pressed her though she couldn't come up with how she feels she would have referred to it.

Second, what are some ways you've been proactive yourselves in real life. No need to be graphic, I'm not looking to appropriate your experiences, simply looking for some inspiration as to how to write. Too often I find female characters in these stories either don't act, or they are crazed sex addicts who worship the dick. I'd like some examples to work with for an appropriate level of how a normal girl thinks to act.

Lastly, are there any common things that always make you cringe when reading female characters? I'd really like to know if there are things I should avoid. As I've said, I am having a female friend proofread it for me, but I would like more perspective. Thanks for any help.

SO, did anyone end up helping or...?
I got some insight, but I'm always interested in other views and opinions on the matter. I've since taken on a game with a female protagonist as well as my own game with both a man and a woman. So any advice is appreciated.

Write scenes for characters and ignore the gender. As for what to call your genitals, think of from a male perspective. Penis = vagina, clinical and not too sexy. Cock = pussy, feels sexual and you wouldn't really call it that when alone. Dick = vag, how most females that I know call it when not having sex or in a doctor's office (or having sex in a doctor's office).

When it came to designing my characters I did just that, worrying more about their character. However what I'm worried about is specifically the thoughts and sexual points. While I agree that a character should not be defined by their gender, their gender will have an effect on sex.

You should look at your target audience. Male? Go with the porn cringe you see in most games. Female? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh, use the quote I just typed? Point is: you can't please everybody at once and a certain demographic expects a certain writing style, even though it might be ridiculous.

Sometimes you say the most toxic shit, man. Here I am trying to improve my writing and you think to A, insult women, and B, imply that men aren't capable of empathizing with a female perspective. I think you should take a seat back and watch for a while, because you're constantly causing adversity with your ignorance.

. I Take it by that you mean male.

Yes i am male but conversley i applaud darthseduction for thinking out side the box and attempting to bring a new prespective to games rather than the usual tried and tested format we see.I think it will be refreshing, waiting to see what you come up with @darthseduction. Wishing you all the best with your project

What you're saying is the equivalent of making a porn movie where you zoom in on the dude's face when he's about to shoot his load. I'm sure women love that, but if you're male (which is your main target audience), it's fucking retarded.

As I said before: determine your target audience, write accordingly.

No, its not at all what he's saying. I honestly don't care if you personally are interested in what I'm writing, I'm sure you'll actually like it if you play it, but I could care less. What I want to do is create female characters who aren't as flat and broken as most of the ones in games we play. You can't tell me you're satisfied with D being dumber than a box of rocks or that its normal for Lisa to go from 100 to zero every fucking time you move forward. You can't be satisfied with the obvious MPD that Ann has as she goes from total submissive slut to mother, to bitch. What I want to do is write realistic but still sexy women.

I'm not looking to write prudes. I am looking to write someone more like Ashley from Good Girl Gone Bad (I hadn't played that when I started this thread) which, you'll find is written by a woman. Only even then I wanna take it a step further because Eva definitely let her prejudices flow when it came to bad Ashley, I want to write a character who can still maintain her self respect while also being a slut. I want to write a woman who accepts being a slut, so that every time she gets accused of it she owns it, but who isn't a weak little bitch.

I don't know where the hatred you hold in your heart for women comes from... probably from your virginity... or the virginity I assume you have because of your comments in other threads insulting the entire community as virgins... seems like projection to me.

You just made me laugh and cry at the same time. There's great future for you in land of literature.

Even my BF gets turned off by plot that goes "Hello, lets fuck! What's your name, by the way? Oh, you will tell me when your mouth is free."

This is a tricky question, I'm not sure how to approach it.

First, the context. You're making a porn game. I don't know what kind of game you're going for or the kinks you're going to add, but the staple of porn is that it isn't realistic. Porn is this alternate dimension where virgins don't feel pain the first time they have sex, where women have three orgasms while the dude just lays back, and if you rape a girl long enough, she'll end up enjoying it. Those things might sound sexy depending on the person you are, but it doesn't make a lot of sense if you think about it. But it's not supposed to. It would be boring otherwise.
So, in a way, "a meme" is right, as far as the porn action goes. Think about what you want to do, and do it "by the books". Realism is not the focus here.

Although it is possible to make an unrealistic porn scene more than that. The games I like the more are the ones where characters, both males and females, are developped enough, to the point where you can relate or atleast understand their progression and how one ends up fucking the other. If you want a game that completely fails at achieving that, just take Big Brother, it's hilarious. If you want a game that tries to do it but also fails, look at DatingMyDaughter.
In Big Brother, it's easy. The characters have no character. They might aswell be called "sex template 1" and so on.
In Dating My Daughter, the daughter seems to have some character, but she's completely unrelatable. No idea what sex is, 100% oblivious to the fact that she's hot (if you think a 14 year old is hot), laughably stupid. Her brown hair friend is pretty much on the same level, but on the opposite side of the spectrum. Her motivation in life is "be horny" and "be available for MC". She might aswell be lost in time whenever she's not around.

To me, that's what sells a character. Being able to picture them outside of a scene they're in and imagine what their day to day life would be like. It's much more satisfying to see characters interact with each other and their relationship evolve if you can understand why things are progressing this way, rather than seeing a sex session out of nowhere because "that's what happens in a porn game".
If you neglect every aspect of your character but her sex drive, you're just making a target for Sarkeesian. Think of sex as just another aspect of life, and not their sole motivation in life. Needless to say, if their sole motivation in life is the MC, it's even worse.
From that, you can go any direction you want, there isn't a template for making women or anything. The best way to go is to clearly define your character (shy, provocative, joyful, nervous, energetic, etc) and make sure their actions don't contradict these traits.

It really depends from a person to another. Women are not different from men, there isn't a stereotype that will apply to all of them. In relation to what I was saying, if your character is hot and knows it, she could say "pussy" because she knows it would arouse the person she's trying to fuck. Makes me think of Ygritte in Game of Thrones (maybe not the best reference, but a lot of people will get it), she acts a certain way towards Jon because she understands how he is.
As far as argot goes, I don't find it very sexy, but it's better in english. My main language is french, and the literal translation for those is just plain unappealing. Like, yuck.

Well, for one, the dick worshipping isn't real. It makes me cringe every time I see it in games/hentai, like "I've fallen in love with the D". Urgh.
So again, that will depend on the behaviour of the character. People in general also like to pretend they don't just intend to have sex with each other, both people act as if "it's not about that, we're just having a conversation because we appreciate what we have in common and what we don't have in common". Which is true, too, but people don't often admit their real intention is to get laid. Everyone wants to keep a classier image than that.

Lastly, are there any common things that always make you cringe when reading female characters?
Well, I've already tackled that here and there, but it wouldn't hurt to reiterate. Of course, these are just things I don't like, it won't be true for everyone.
1. No MC worshipping. MC is just a guy, and there are billions of those things.
2. No dick worshipping. Just... get over it.
3. No sex object. If you want your female to be a character, she has to act like a female, and not just something to be used in a later sex scene. It's also boring to play a game that predictable.

I want to write a character who can still maintain her self respect while also being a slut. I want to write a woman who accepts being a slut, so that every time she gets accused of it she owns it, but who isn't a weak little bitch.
Tricky again. I don't think any woman would like being called a slut by just anyone, unless they have that particular kink. Things that are arousing during sex often aren't outside of sex. And many things are arousing because of the person you're doing said things with.

To sum up, the way I would go about it is just picture the character through her life, and not just at a particular moment (when she meets the love interest). Every decision matches their character and their life experience. Not every decision revolves around MC. I know it isn't very specific, but that's because you don't have to be reductive when it comes to a female character. Colourful females can exist and be relatable and fun to play with. But it needs to have some sort of logic in there.

Yeah, when I was calling out that part I was more talking about in her head. I don't know if you've played Chloe18, but at this point in the game she should have owned her sexuality, but she still acts all timid and like she isn't a slut.

To be clear, I use slut in a different context. "A sexually confident and liberated woman" is a mouthful. So I use slut in that context. I should really start defining that before I say it. But yeah, what bugs me is when a character makes a transformation from chaste and repressed to liberated and erotic but then can't admit what she's become in spite of this having been her goal.

I get retaliating if a douchebag insults her for her sexuality, but not owning it in the moment gets kinda unbelievable.

Again, that might just be my interpretation, but yeah.

1. No MC worshipping. MC is just a guy, and there are billions of those things.

This is definitely already on my list of no nos but thanks for reiterating it. I too get taken out of it when this shit happens (looking at your Faerin). The first one one be a problem in either of my games, because, at least so far, the female character is an MC. Alexis, in my first game, shares the spot with her twin brother, but because of a traumatic event in their past he's actually the one with the worship problem. Even then, its explained, she saved him from their father's sexual abuse... killed the man even. So of course he worships her.

Although it is possible to make an unrealistic porn scene more than that. The games I like the more are the ones where characters, both males and females, are developped enough, to the point where you can relate or atleast understand their progression and how one ends up fucking the other. This is exactly what I want to avoid. So thank you for your input here. I have tried to use dialogue to reveal as much character as I can with my MC's in the twin game. There's a scene where they're in a diner telling their mother a story about a game of Dungeons and Dragons they played recently. The two of them are excitedly telling the story, swapping between another as twins are wont to do, as they explain how Alexander seduced and slept with the humanoid male form of a dragon while they looted its lair and then he assassinated the dragon in it's sleep. It shows their love of gaming, their sense of humor, and hints at Alexander's sexuality not necessarily being completely straight. I aim to do this as much as possible.

Thanks to all that I've read, I probably will have them use pussy more often... like you said, I think using the scientific terms, like vagina don't work, and while I've read some cuter pet names for them... I feel like that's a guy writing a woman saying it... I don't imagine a girl referring to it as her "cunny" or something like that...

About your questions in general:

This subject is very hard to approach objectively, even for me as I feel that it really depends on the woman's / girl's personality and how they think. Looking into anyone's thoughts is probably a very messy thing.

Now, this might offend people, but I hope to god that it doesn't:

If you are looking to create a natural woman character and put her into an adult game, you really need to narrow down the sample set of personalities.

There are many women, who actually don't think about sex like 90% of the time. There are a couple of days or maybe only a single day in a month when a woman feels that she needs someone close. Other times she wants someone's attention and to appreciate her presence. There's also the urge (or need) to be loved, which sometimes manifest in the need to have a child when they reach their mid 30s. This type of woman is very common and it is probably not what you are looking for when it comes to adult games that target men (in my opinion).

For those types of games, you probably need women with very high sex drive (libido) who often have dirty thoughts more often than the average woman described above.

Let me try and answer your first and second question:
I personally felt the "horniest" when I was 16-17 and read romantic novels that have gone a bit further than the usual "Two lovers held each other... their cheeks were red... they kissed" and went more like "...she took off his trousers and slid her delicate small hands into the man's sweaty shorts...". The stories were long and you normally read 1 or 2 sex scenes throughout the whole story. Arousal is something that was built up by the interaction of the two characters. How they met, what adventures they had together before they ended up in eachother's arms? The sex part is only the icing on the cake so to speak.

I personally enjoy very detailed descriptions of a sex scene, including what goes around in each participant's head before anything physical happens. What each participant thinks of the other one? Does he like her hair and scent? Does she enjoy being held by the man and being kissed by him?

In a short summary:
Have a motivation for sex. - Just as if you were writing a great detective story where the protagonist is trying to find out what the killer's motivation was.
Talk about feelings and relationships.
Create a good background story around your characters and maybe even refer to them as you write a sex scene.
Don't talk about the person as if it was an object. - For lack of a better word: men prefer "things", while women prefer "feelings". So, give your characters feelings as if their affection was real.

Q: "How do you refer to your genitals?" - if naming my genitalia matters (sex talk with a partner) then it's definitely "my pussy". Otherwise I refer to it as "my wetness" when I think about it.

"I don't imagine a girl referring to it as her "cunny" or something like that..." - Well, you'd be surprised how many names people like to attach to their genitalia. I could imagine girls reffering to it this way when they talk to each other, but probably not thinking of it that way when they fantasize.

1. My first thought is my lady parts! But, in more serious terms I would say vagina or flower something like that. Call me a romantic! Though with the other stuff, I would have no issues saying Pussy when that turns my man on.

2. I like to consider myself a lover of sex and the awesome feeling of euphoria I get from it. I'm not fully sure I need to be any more proactive then just flirting with a man.

3. I would say something I just find cliche and boring is the fact that every woman in almost every story is weak. I personally like a woman who is really into sex and finds erotica sexy. Fantasy is fun. There are women who truly enjoy sex, I love a good dick.

But, I usually wouldn't say some of the things normal stories have as odd as it may seem with some of my VO work.

Lastly. I feel there is no point trying to understand someone elses fetishes. We love what we love. So a writer should just follow what he enjoys most!

No worries, thanks again, it's nice to have as much info as I have. I will say that weakness shouldn't be a problem... at least with the first game she's definitely the stronger character... The second one the player can make her pretty timid if that's their thing, but you can also make her more bold, so yeah. Thanks again, everyone, seriously.
