That is called worldbuilding and those side characters are used for getting to see how the main characters personalities and motivations are in a natural way. Imo this is much better for getting to know your character (show, don't tell) rather than what a lot of other AVNs do: A giant monologue on a black screen with maybe the characters that are being talked abou in the background at the beginning of the story.Bro, Better Call Saul is NOT an AVN and most of all, it wasn't axed by their authors because they realised it would have taken them much more development years than expected.
This AVN is just like a person with a huge overproportioned body: enormous head, big long arms, ample torso, narrow hips, tiny tiny legs and small hands and feet.
What is the point of all these side characters where almost nothing happens between MC and the main girl that was introduced first?
Just to make clear my point: this happens to too many AVNs.
The way this game does it, it's much more likely to remember each person's characteristics for a longer time. The latter way almost always makes you think "who are they again?" when we first meet them.
