To pay attention from the start, this story is far more complex then you first thought. Take it slow, take everything in, it's hella dark but you'll enjoy 95%. Tip for this game and future ones, pressing H when a scene flashes for a split second causes it to pause so you can see/read it.

After thinking about it and looking back at all the girls I think I have to say Futaba at this point, she started off fine and had a good story start, did make some progress during the first couple chapters and then it just felt like she stalled in the last few updates. I don't remember seeing her much even in my need to forward time so just gonna do a random visit event, I don't think I did any invites for her after the first few and stopped going the hangout events by chapter 3. After the whole book thing I think she fell off for me quite a bit. Even the latest events with her lacked any connection for me.

The complaints would have to be specifically about the dream / simulation existing for a purpose.
Otherwise it's just not being happy about my very rough overview about where I think things stand, and I'm in chapter 3.5 so things are bound to change with an entire chapter's worth of events to still go for. Though I'll listen to your ideas if you have any.

Gonna throw in my 2 cents after reading a few people's opinion on our Emerald Weeb, I like Molly a lot. From the first time we meet her I thought she was adorable and as a person who grew up an anime nerd her behaviour isn't weird enough for me to be turned off (I've seen and met some people like that though Molly is on the more extreme side) I adore her personality and was disappointed by her behaviour towards Rin rather then mad and disliked. She's positive when a lot of the character's aren't really, she's a go getter even if it doesn't always go her way but it adds to her charm, like Rin I actually wanted Sensei to be more supportive of her when she put her self down or felt she was less worthy, the fact that she stayed strong despite Sensei doing what he did during Lavender Green (And I don't think we have a 100% answer to how far it went) and was more worried about losing her friend and seeing how it was affecting him, it felt like she put aside and dealt with her truma as best she could to be there for him. I've got scattered thoughts atm about her and probably many I am forgetting to mention or put down (Oh like I love the fact she makes cosplays for everyone) just comes down to, her character and the way she's written has hit me in the feels and I wanna make that tiny Irish girl smile and happy, same as Rin and same as the Wizards.

I think this is a better interpretation of a "simulation" plotline and could possibly work. Like you said, the overarching reasoning behind everything doesn't matter as much as what's actually happening to the characters.
I'm honestly leaning more towards the everything Akira experiencing just being symbolic manifestations of his delusions a la Monogatari series. The world is real and everything is happening, but the narrator(s) are unreliable. Whether supernatural or not, I still feel like the Gods are things he created in his own mind, as segments of his personality and trauma that he is splitting away from himself and giving sentience (either real or false.) Sana and the other characters might be experiencing this phenomenon as well, conjuring up their own "gods" because they can't face their problems and insecurities.
The "gods" are real, because they believe they are. They must be believed in, be feared, be dreaded, be avoided, be respected, be worshipped, be feared, be despised, be wished upon. For that is why they exist.
It's a common theme in Japanese story-telling and it stems from the eastern cultural belief system and how they viewed gods in the past. I wouldn't put it past Selebus, we've seen first-hand his familiarity with Japanese culture throughout the story.
As for the reason behind why everyone is manifesting these supernatural or delusional entities? Who knows, maybe there is something wrong with the town they live in, Silent Hill style. Maybe there's an evil advanced pharmeceutical company that is drugging the townspeople to keep them controlled/experimenting with them. Could go so many directions.
Again, what matters is not the explanation of the events but the meaning and narrative purpose behind them in my eyes.

I agree that Futaba's story has gotten less attention in recent updates, but I think that is a natural result of a story with so many characters which, plot-wise, needs to focus at this time on those characters who are slowly figuring out that something weird is going on.
Someone up above said something about Futaba liking books too much and I don't even understand what that sentence means as it is impossible.
