Some of you like to post pictures of fake scenarios that look like they are from the game. Someone mentioned an editor or something. Is this something everyone can do? Is it easy, is it complicated? Is it a secret?

The engine is Koikatsu, and the cards are on the first post under LiL KK cards. You need to learn how to set up shots, tho, otherwise it'll look weird.
Speaking of first post stuff, get the Naming Save Mod too, it's really useful.

The ones that actually look like they could be in the game are likely monthly comissions from Selebus. There's a bunch of fan made images but the lighting and framing is always off. Most of the character models are available to play with though.

Hey now, Zuko is actually getting pretty good with theirs. They even posted a lighting tutorial recently!
First off: I really like these renders. I can almost envision it as a 'Battle of Kumon-mi' type situation, where Yumi makes open threats but Nodoka's just messing around.

Secondly: you asked about lighting and shadows, sooo... mini tutorial time.

With all that information in mind, lets compare the final renders, both with and without added lighting:

Keep practicing, man! It's a really fun and addicting hobby once you get used to it.

Is the naming save mod safe to use? No bugs, no changes between versions and no accidental deleted saves or whatever?

And yeah, I think that's more on the complicated side. Wonder if the locations used for this game are defaults or if you need those too? I don't think I will actually commit to it tho. Looked at the lighting quoted just now and I don't think I want to go through the effort of learning that stuff.

Relatively safe to use.
Some things in game are unique, like the girls dorms.
Others are not, like the school.

Yeah, Kolkatsu — or any 3D modeling app — isn’t for the faint of heart. It takes a while to learn how to get things even into the right positions, not clipping (aka thrusting through each other in ways other than the fun ones), let alone lighting, framing, manipulating hair and clothes so they hang realistically… You need to develop not only a film director’s eye to compose shots on three dimensions (four, if you want to play with animation), but also a fair level of technical skill and a lot of patience.

I’ve played around with KK, Honey Select (by Illusion, the same Japanese studio), as well as more serious engines like Daz and Blender. (I was looking at adapting some of my fiction to VN or graphic novel form.)

And… I’m not sure I’ll ever be any good at it.

Still, it’s fun, if you want to play around with the characters from this game, or others. There are many tutorials to get you started and plugins to add items, functions, etc.

The funny thing is KK started, not as an anime-style 3D modeling engine, but as a silly school harem game of exactly the sort that the early episodes of LiL are spoofing.

Oh—and props to Selebus, for managing to take a fairly basic, limited modeling app and using it to create shots like the ones of Rin blowing bubbles in the baths. Impressive!

(Yes, I’m pretty sure that most of the shots included in the game are heavily processed in Photoshop or some other pro-level image editing app. Still! Nice!)

Do wish his anims were better though, but he hates making em so rip.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember a screenshot or something of him mentioning that he hated the anime style but it was the only quick way to bring his vision to life, and that someday he'd like to remake it in a non-anime style.

Yeah Id like to see that cause im not sure I believe it.
He does the anime style very well and it's abundantly clear he has artistic vision with it given the composition of some shots.

Look at Nodoka being murdered by Ami, the eye pop especially.
Also Molly and her weeb notes.

While waiting for a confirmation, I'd say that the anime style comes off very well because of his artistic vision. Otherwise, he'd just do basic KK shots with the poses he needs to show. His perfectionism allows for nothing other than the best given the amount of work you have to do with KK for the lighting in his scene to come off as miles better as other games that use KK.

Wasn't it that he would prefer 2D and only uses 3D / Koikatsu because he has little drawing ability? Selebus is an Actual Weeb and it seems unlikely to me that in any reality he would make something non-anime (if by "non-anime" we're referring to the more realistic Daz 3D / whatever style used in most 3D WEGs). I recall a comment that if not for Koikatsu then LiL would never exist because he wouldn't be satisfied with the art he could produce on his own, but he plans to resolve that by hiring an artist for his upcoming yuri game, not by doing something non-anime. (Then again, maybe his dream is to make a VN taking place in Australia with a photorealistic recreation of Steve Irwin as the primary hero.)
