How did I just find out about this game?
One way I evaluate new games I stumble across is when the thread here was started vs. the changelog, as it gives me an idea of how much the Dev updates and whether to jump aboard with Patreon. Looking at the thread date here less than a year ago and with the amount of updates I see... Good Lord. This is prolific updating. Has the game been out only a year or is this a misleading thread start date?

I am just as shocked, but yeah, currently author getting a break for a month since its 1 year anniversary, and man this is much deserved break =)
Currently playing for 1,5 weeks (using nearly all my free time for it) and still some content left!
I highly suggest you play this game, if you aren't already. It is amazing how much content the author packs into every release, and the amount of variety in the characters is really good. There is a whole lot of content in the game, and it's only at 10% completed. Cannot recommend this game enough.

Because of this game I looked into it and...Its actually really awesome! Though you need tons of mods to get "better experience"
As was mentioned, dev (Selebus) is currently on a month long break. However, the normal schedule is 2 updates a month usually including ~40k words and hundreds of renders each. The game already has a higher word count than the entire LotR books and the Hobbit combined. The pace this game is updated at is astounding. Not to mention the writing is great.
One year anniversary is coming up in a little over 2 weeks!

There's like 4 or 5 5-star rated games using this art engine on f95. This game is the second best-rated game using this art engine, I believe the first is Hero's Harem Guild. I like all the highly rated ones for different reasons, I think LiL has the best story though.
Okay, I've been trying to hold off on theorizing until I was caught up, but I can't help it. I've had a feeling since the very first happy scene and nothing is going against it so far, so I thought I'd share. (For the record, I'm before Rewrite, but I feel like I've done just about every single thing I could do before that, aside from Chika's events to remain a good homey)
Maya is obviously special. It doesn't seem like this game takes place in reality (as opposed to it being reality seen through the eyes of someone mentally unwell, it feels more like this just isn't real at all). I think most of these characters are just fantasy characters. But Maya is real. Or at the very least, she represents someone real to us. Someone that probably killed themselves. Probably because of us. Because we're a douche bag.
The "Swim Trip" happy scene in particular really strongly seemed to hint that Maya was real and everyone else wasn't. And she's the constant focus of happy scenes in general, which often focus on her dead body.Also there's something buried under our feet. Probably her dead body once again.
My theory is Maya is either our daughter or we're a real life teacher and she was a student of ours. Considering the events of this fantasy life, and his thoughts, it's pretty likely that he sexually abused her and this lead to her killing herself. Then the "jump" at the beginning of the game is him jumping off of a building due to his guilt. And this game would either be his dream while in a coma or his experience in hell.
I've caught wind of some stuff in this thread from later in the game that may throw my entire theory out of the window. But that's what it feels like to me so far.

Given the latest events, you're way off. They're connected but not in an abusive way. That much I'll say. Keep an eye out on the wiki on how to unlock the happy events. It's implied later in the game that they both shared something possibly romantic and Maya will hint towards that. Not with Player Sensei but a past iteration before we took control.

Heyyy I want good stories too, it kinda kills all the progress we've done and fun times we had only to find out she ain't real!!!
At least let Sensei kill himself so he joins the buried body or something, hmph!!!

Yeah, it would be kind of cliche and predictable. Like I said, this theory immediately came to me after happy scene #1.
But for one, I'm not sure anything has really implied that this game will have a happy ending, or that our character is not a bad person at his core. And two, good stories can still have pretty cliched answers. Particularly in this genre.
This is a pretty Lynchian game, all around, and he's definitely done some stuff (see Mulholland Drive) where he takes an extremely simple plot and then shows it in the most confusing way possible. And it can be freaking brilliant, IMO. Whereas no normal way to show a plot like that would ever be able to work to such a degree.
I'm not 100% sure this is happening or anything. But it feels like it so far to me. I'll have to see if I still feel that way as I advance further, or if it completely flushes my theories down the toilet.
