More to your point, I think there's enough to assume that Sekai plays a center role (or was supposed to play that role before her untimely death, thus condemning Kaori to it by association). From what we've seen and assumed, she was being groomed to it. There is not enough however to conclude that Akira isn't the central character, because he could simply be influenced by either a willing or unwilling Sekai, which would be enough to call him Sekai (either because he's playing her role, or has traces of her), and yet still retain his protagonism.
