It's not explained in-game, as "red path" and "green path" are ways the fans have come up with to describe how the game tracks things. Why is it so hard to get a straight answer out of any of you? Is it so hard to believe that there are people in this world who just likes to do things right the first time without going through too much effort to get there? Like You tell me the concept but don't give me the base, the thing I'm suppose to stand on to move on. Have I just not gotten to the point where this green and red path thing is explained?
If you go into the menu and look at the list of events, you'll see that the events you've completed will be highlighted in green.
If you miss the trigger for an event (for example, if you turn down one of the side characters sexual advances), the event will be marked out with a red line, and the name will also be red, indicating a missed event (the name also changes.
"Green Path" isimply means you're making choices that show every event in the game. "Red Path" means you're making some choices that blocked off events.
In the early game, the biggest way to wind up on the red path is to turn down Sara (Sana's mother) when she propositions you. This blocks off quite a few events for both Sara and Sana later in the game (they won't show as missed until you actually reach their point in the story, though). Turning down Ami is another major one. Generally speaking, saying no to sex will always result in missed events (obviously).
I mentioned in a previous post that doing a certain Chika event too soon will cause a lot of Rin's events to get missed. Later (in chapter 2) going on a trip with Chika before doing all the Yumi events from that update will cause a scene MUCH later in the game (chapter 3) to be missed. I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting, but those are the big "how did I miss this" moments.
You can also miss events by not having enough Lust poitns with a girl. Not having enough Affection won't cause events to be missed (progress pauses until you have enough to trigger the event), but Lust determines whether sex scenes that trigger at very specific story moments happen or not. It's for this reason that most people here suggest using the Universal Ren'py Mod or a save file editor to alter values to a high number so you don't risk missing content.
