chef places a turd on a plate at fine dining establishment
"How embarrassing that you don't want to eat this free turd! Served to you by us, in this Fine Dining Establishment!"
To explain the metaphor...Yet you're still playing and talking about it. Must be some gourmet shit.
It legitimately is a fine dining establishment! There's a great deal of high-quality fare on offer and I've been enjoying my meal immensely. And yet, when the chef rolls out of the kitchen with the substance in question (referring specifically to audience-derived content) I won't be too happy about eating it. That's because it is not the same as the gourmet experience I've partaken thus far.
The advice you're getting from us (if I understand accurately) is that we want to read your vision, and we feel that writing narrative beats according to audience desires will dilute your story. If you're hurting for material, (the thinking goes,) step back and choose a path that does match your vision. No need to carry on a tradition for its own sake.
We don't read and ponder and talk just because of the update rate, or the word count, or even the naked girls. It's all about the outstanding characters, intriguing plot, and consistent quality. Those are the core elements that fuel all the support and community around this work. I hazard that if those pillars are staunchly upheld, everyone involved will be more satisfied in the end.
