it sounds to me like they are doing cpu based rendering, not a gpu based system.
Even with millions upon millions of polligons, lighting etc. a gpu based system would render it out in a fraction of the time a cpu based render system will, assuminng youre using somewhat uptodate card.
Im not sure what 3d tool(s) they are using. but maybe they should check out octane render.
as an example a 15min renderinng using the cpu takes 15min. using octane render it takes 1sec.
