A solution for people that don't like bad ends has existed nearly forever. Save the game and load when you lose.[Lots of stuff about no bad ends because some people dislike them]
You can boil down the basically formula for a "game" as a set of challenges you give to the player to overcome that makes the player's brain release the good brain chemicals.Pretty sure games are for entertainment first and foremost
The problem is that if there is no challenge, the brain doesn't give you the good brain chemicals. This becomes boring. Story can salvage a boring game because the player will want to at least give it one run through for the story content, but after that single run through you have nothing because you don't have a game that actually achieves its goal of being an enjoyable game. You have something people played for the story content only and not the game.
You need a fun gameplay loop that provides varied challenges due to overlapping mechanics generating unexpected results forcing the player into *meaningful* decisions to produce this.
That's why people keep saying it's not a game, it's a VN with a map. The game is missing.
