Game used to be created by a team of 2. They split up. TTrick didn't want to learn Unity, so re-built it on his own engine.

Game is still in development, last release was in March. It's also going early access on Steam.

He merely found a programming language he was comfortable with, did some research, and then implemented many Ren'Py-like features. This might be oversimplifying it a bit, though.

Yes, Unity is overkill for a VN. I've seen one decent implementation, another custom engine, for the Timestamps games... but even that can be janky at times.
