I think that happens more than people think. Especially with reboots.

Artists/Dev grow in skill and are then horrified at their own creation and want to get it up to a standard they find acceptable. So they do a reboot...
Unfortunately, it's almost never what the fans want.

The two best examples I can think off.
Ren'Py - Abandoned - Reincarnotica [v0.05] [Polyrotix] | F95zone | Adult Games | Comics | Mods | Cheats
This game was literally rewritten/rebooted from the start about 3-4 times.

Ren'Py - Abandoned - False Hero [v0.39.1 Beta] [Enyo Eerie] | F95zone | Adult Games | Comics | Mods | Cheats
I know Polyrotix did not do a reboot, but his standards were so high that he just started putting himself under enormous pressure to deliver the next update. Getting more stressed and not being able to deliver. It's a personality trait.
Perfectionism is a deathly sin for game devs.

There is no such thing as perfection.

Certainly not when it comes to porn, because everybody has their own preferences and kinks. With some games, something just clicks and (at least in my experience) this click has nothing to do with technical excellence.

I've been saying this my whole life!!!

"I'm sorry, mom. I didn't finish cleaning my room because I'm such a perfectionist that it would never look as good as I'd want to."

"I'm sorry, teacher. I didn't finish my essay because I'm such a perfectionist that nothing I wrote seemed worthy of your attention."

"I'm sorry, boss. I didn't finish the task you gave me because blablabla..."

The outcomes were... varied.

Has the dev say anything new on discord? I know V19 had posted on steam that an update would be released some time last week but there's been no new information since.

My theory on why this seems to happen so often is I think many of the great games that get abandoned were being made by perfectionists. Being like that myself about some things I know just how easy it is to get stuck in your own head about every tiny detail which can lead to no progress being made eventually.
I think there's also a touch of George RR Martin Syndrome.

Basically, a dev starts work only having a vague idea of the plot they want to write. Their plan is to mostly "make it up as they go". But as they go, they start to have new ideas, so they add something here, expand on something else there, drop in a few new characters, and so on. The whole project starts to bloat far beyond their original assumption. Eventually things get out of hand, as they've added too much and are now overwhelmed by the scope of the project. Or they now no longer have an idea of how they're going to pay off all the things they've set up.

Panic and dread sets in, and they start adding in even more new stuff in a desperate attempt to pad out the story and tread water until they can figure out a solution, which just makes everything worse. Ultimately, the pressure gets to be too much, their writer's block gets too strong, and they just sort of shut down. At which point, they abandon the project. Devs with no shame just start up another project (to try and keep milking support or to try and make a better game by avoiding the mistakes they made the first time), but more self-conscious devs may just disappear entirely because it's easier than admitting you screwed up.
