VN Ren'Py Lost at Birth [Ch. 10 CE Part 1] [V19]

I tried to play the father who just wants to take care of the girl who needs help, I tried to refuse her advances, I tried to focus on Justine, but the game won't allow it, Kailey gets what she wants, and even though I try to reduce the intensity of the relationship, it's still taking big steps, and I have no control over it.

I even think the girl isn't even his daughter, which is why she's trying so hard to have a relationship with him, one that isn't father and daughter.

There are no good people in this game, everyone has an inner reason for doing what they do, acting the way they do, Kailey would be no different.

At the moment, Justine seems like a worse person than Kailey, but that's simply because we know why Justine does what she does, but we don't know anything about Kailey.

And yet, based on the interactions I've seen, I prefer Kailey over Justine, for now at least.

For the benefit of other Mac users here, these are the steps that need to be taken so that the market build app can run on MacOS.

1. Download the market build and unzip (duh)
2. Remove the quarantine that's imposed by Gatekeeper on about everything these days. In Terminal, type "xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine " without the quotes and drag the unzipped folder in the Terminal window so that Terminal will fill in the path to the folder for you. Mind there is a space between the command and the path. Hit enter. Quarantine should now be gone.
3. Back to Finder. Locate the Lost_at_Birth app in the market build download and crack it open (right click, Show package contents)
4. Check if the Lost_at_Birth file in the MacOS folder hasn't lost its execute permission during unzipping. Its kind should be Unix executable. If it's anything else, add the missing execute permission back to this file. In Terminal, type "chmod +x " without the quotes and drag the file in the window. Again, mind the space. Hit enter.
5. Back to Finder. Create a new folder inside /Contents/Resources and name this folder autorun
6. Now locate in the market build download the following folders and files: game, renpy, Lost_at_Birth.py and Lost_at_Birth.sh
7. Move those folders and files from the step above to the autorun folder created in step 3. The end result should look like this
8. That's it. The Lost_at_Birth app is now complete. You can safely discard the left over files from the market build now.

Now here's the thing, why don't people give the same amount of leeway to the wife's character? Well, I could make a guess. Because this is a daughter incest game and anything that gets in the way of that is the bad guy. MC and Justine probably lost that spark a long time ago. It becomes monotonous and routine, and they slowly drift apart. MC turns to cheating while she leans on alcohol. But they both still want to make it work and do what they can to keep their marriage going. Imagine how it would feel if your husband suddenly springs an adult daughter who is now living at your home, and all his attention (which was limited in the first place) is now going to this daughter. If your (this post and the previous one isn't directed at you specifically) answer is that she should be an obedient woman who doesn't think for herself and only serve the man, well... And If you think her guarded stance on this arrangement is toxic, you might need some reality check.

I do have some insight into springing an adult daughter upon a family, it happened to my family, one of my fathers daughters turned up on the door step as a young adult, there were a few but only one turned up on the doorstep. In hindsight I was perhaps a bit harsh on the wife character. Still her influence is terrible, for example, the Father comes home and finds his daughter drunk and high provided for and encouraged by the wife. The wife's emotional state swings from one end of the emotion pendulum to the other. You never know what sort of mood she will be in from scene to scene or how she will react. I'll leave it there I dont want to dwell on the negative too much, plenty has been said already in other posts. I'm hopeful her character will have more to contribute to the story. She is certainly not beyond redemption.

Our marriage is very much a partnership of equals although she does spoil me rotten at times. Thanks for the chat, it has been interesting

Haha, I just want to clarify that the "you" in our discussion was the "generic you" and not aimed at you specifically. Your first reply made it very clear that you were not the type of low level reader who is just looking for some "wholesome" daddy daughter romance without this "pesky" wife in the way.

There is nothing wrong with having preferences between the potential LI, but this game is not exactly written to be played like a dating sim or something. The story is quite focused and on the rails. You can't choose to neglect the wife, nor can you stop the relationship with Kailey. The drama that this situation presents essentially is the story the dev seems to be exploring. If you could drop one of the girls, the plot progression would be totally different and likely would have to be diluted to account for the possible variations instead of focusing on specific relationship dynamics stemming from deliberately chosen events. I'm sure there will be a pivotal moment somewhere down the road (probably closer to the end of the story) where the player has to make a big decision, though. Just not yet.

That was really my main point on this topic. Not every game has to be the same. I just wish people could appreciate quality products based on the dev intent and how well they deliver their vision, instead of always trying to fit whatever games they are playing into their own narrow preferences.

I think we did get to see a different side of Kailey this last update. And it was not completely pleasant to be honest.

The one criticism I have about this game is that what you said about motivations extents to the MC as well. In many games, the MC is a blank slate who does whatever the player tells him to do, and who is whatever the player thinks he is. That's not really the case here. This MC does quite some stuff which I can't really condone, or even understand, sometimes.

Variety is the spice of life. Some games have a very defined MC which can only be nudged slightly, others offer a more pliable one that is closer to a blank slate. They both have pros and cons. Well defined MCs tend to have much better and consistent characterizations, but a lot of players will not enjoy an MC who they disapprove of. Blank slate ones obviously offer more agency to the player, but the MC is often just a player avatar rather than a convincingly written character (and many times, they are just schizophrenic and inconsistent). Those are not the inevitable outcome for either style, but just like the choice of narrative POV (first, second, third person), they all have their place in these games.

I've been thinking about this for a bit and I think that when it comes to the wife's alcohol abuse it isn't something that is happening in a vacuum. Usually, alcoholics will seek out a partner who enables their substance abuse. In this chapter, we see a little bit of that. The wife hits the mini fridge just as soon as they are in the hotel room and she asks him if she can have a drink even though they had both agreed she would stop. All he has to do is say no when she wants to shoot an airplane bottle of cheap gin but he agrees. He is enabling her abuse of alcohol as part of the dynamic of their relationship. When he isn't giving her his explicit permission he is giving her implicit excuses for his behavior (affairs, neglect, always working) that are only valid to her addict mind. It is really tough for an alcoholic to make any progress in their treatment while they are in a relationship with an enabler. The enabler is always there to pick them up, dust them off, and assure them that everything is fine even when it isn't. So while I hope that their relationship can be salvageable it might be best for her in the long run if they split up. This is a hard pill to swallow but when you are facing facts her recovery needs to take precedence for both of them, and that may not happen until she is allowed to hit rock bottom and know without a doubt that she needs help.

Made a compresed Android port of Lost at Birth Chapter 6 with the walkthrough mod.

Got some basic gestures loaded in: swipe up for save menu, swipe down to hide UI, swipe left for history and swipe right to skip.

Please let me know if you encounter any issues with the port and I'll see what I can do to get them sorted.
