since you and few other 5 yr olds somehow made it to this site ill teach you as a good natured adult i am:
1. they are expressing their opinions (things like saving game status and skip dialog options are basics of the basics can be done without but they sure as fuck are not to be paywalled, do you dumbasses pay when you go to toilet and need to use loo roll? or do you have log book in the corner?)
2. The moment you stepped on platform like patreon you have been made humble toward public opinion, i dont give a shit if in her private time your mom does your pops up the ass thats their business, but if you go out into the public domain with how your parents have sex, you are going to get all kinds of opinions. whether your pops warty ass is worth price of admission is one of them.
3. Since some have difficulty grasping it, fucking millenials (those who are too young to know a true demo) and all, demo is a show of what the product can do that may contain hooks for full package at the end in case of games, not straight in the fucking beggining m'kay? thats called gating or paywalling you cleary are too lazy to create a demo so you just hack off/wall bits and pieces here and there and then "ask" to be payed/obeyed (origin etc.) (not to mention its not subtle hey you might want to consider supporting this great thing we made nah its !!PAY!! if you want to experience what we made dumbass.)
4. The fuck is this about you are not to make money of your work? (didnt see a post like that yet so you project much?....) see point 2 dumbass its not a product they are selling, what they are selling is promise of updates content w/e (mostly).

I dont think screeching at the devs will make them do anything but despise the people who do so. Come up with some constructive criticism. You could even bring up some solutions. What can be done to improve the current situation? How to tackle the paywall problem without screwing over the devs who spend a lot of time and resources on this game?

Unfortunately there's no easy tool. It involved a lot of fiddling with Javascript/Chrome dev tools and it took me about an hour and a half.

I'm not really mad. I just don't care about this project. It seemed hopeful but this is too much of a hassle. I couldn't care less about seeing all the art, not that it's bad mind you, but not being able to save is an annoyance. If I'm too frustrated to play a game then the game isn't fun and I lose interest.

We don't need any "if". I already did it in a way you describe. It called WW: Midforest Episode v0.2.2 (kinda a mess in version names, but this was a third content version and there was a fourth after). There are assumptions by your side and experience by mine.

Guys... just imagine how hard this work is.

And not only that! You also should write a code and test it over and over again until the game starts to work perfectly. We add some new engine features every update. So now we even work on interactive tavern.

So I just wanted to say that's all about hiring other people to help us make a beautiful game. You can check the credits and see it. (I want to notice that two people preferred to stay anonymous)

You always act like the failure of WW was on everyone else, and you had no fault in it at all. You need the knowhow to actually use already developed market practices, and know the workings of the platform itself that you want to use for funding. Own up to it, you just weren't as good at it back then.

With WW, what you experienced was the lack of awareness of your project between your potential supporters, not the failure of the early access model itself. There wouldn't be a hude oversaturated market dedicated to it if you are indeed correct in your assumption. Plenty of projects do better with the same model WW failed with.


You did indeed gain experience throughout the years, but not in what works and what does not, you gained experience in basic marketing, after which you copied the most predatory practices that marketers in the gaming industry use to manipulate people to drop a few bucks, and ran with it. Not to forget, you also combined it with the (in your words) already failed Early Access model just to double down, and make it more fun for the whole family. With this particular approach of course you will gain support more quickly, what a jolly suprise.

Difference is that the people you fish for are those who aren't that concerned with spending money, and are willing to give you some cash to get rid of all the annoying popups, and gain the most basic functions/user experience along with it, which in most cases create the most basic form of the product. If you couldn't guess, this lack of the most primitive user experience is what's pissing everyone off. Only problem is, the supply of these kind of consumers is limited, so it basically caps what you can actually earn from them, unless you try to exploit the big fish even more. I'm not even going to go into retention and loyalty.

The only thing I can commend you on as someone who works in marketing, is that, I'm certain you knew beforehand how the backlash would give you a boost in awareness. Not to mention, the people talking about it would basically do your job, thanks in no small part to the ample negative word of mouth. Well done on making the user experience the bare minimum I guess, pat yourself on the shoulder for that one, you cunning fox. Golden star.

Please don't die a martyr's death. I'm so sorry to say, but you just said jack shit that was constructive in any meaningful way. The discussion is about monetization models, and not the lengths of the update periods or the painful life a game developer. Every other game developed on patreon, and for that matter the whole indie sphere has to do all of what you just mentioned. I don't see all of them openly self-pitying themselves. If you can’t be humble, at least feel ashamed.
