It's a terrible design. If they gave hints people wouldn't get so confused. If they had default of Landlady, roommate, landlady's sister, roommates cousin, at least people would know what to change them to.Dammit, you beat me to it!

She was 11 when he left. It's very easy to not recognize someone when they go through puberty and become an adult. I moved far from my childhood home at 13 and years later in my mid 20s I went back to visit some old friends that I'd stayed in touch with. They threw me a party and invited a ton of old friends that I hadn't seen or heard from since I'd moved. I didn't recognize any of them. I also hadn't seen a few cousins for over 8 years and when we had a family reunion I didn't recognize some of them either. There is nothing unbelievable about this situation in the game.
