Exactly, this game just showed a moment of greatness! A player roleplayed as they wanted, took an extremely risky decision and it backfired spectacularly, yet, when you think about it, predictably. An actually well-designed RPG campaign twist!I mean, if you have the Dengi invasion start while the Republic is at its weakest then personal heroism being the only thing that might save it feels appropriate, especially given it is an explicitly optional opt in challenge.
Additional mechanics which let you mess with stuff is cool, but it also undermines the end game crisis vibes if you can undermine the invasion too easily in turn.
It put stakes in the larger narrative! If you want to be a big-shot in Ikaanos, to seize the reins from Mordecai, be prepared for big consequences. That's good story arc design.
It surely can be further tweaked and perfected and a "WARNING, if you eff up it's GAME OVER" sign in red is a must...
But, bravo to GD-studios, a real pleasure
