No and no.
Chapters 1 to 3 are like three stories that follow each other in time.
You can play each of them separately.

But, in my opinion, for the understanding of the story, it is better to play them in order.

I don't remember exactly, but in the Walkthrough, it's written : "3 in Sophie room, switch, small lamp, big lamp."
Did you try the 3 ?
