"Hardcore players" may use both of what you mentioned, but SMART players simply use what's given by defaultYou basically have 2 choices on how to do what you want.
1. Install a "MOD" created for the game that lets you play most (if not all) of the "scenes" available in the game. That way you can "cheat" and view the scenes for all the different paths while playing whatever path you want to. The MOD in most cases will also let you do a lot of other things too (like "cheat").
2. Learn how to create "path saves" during your game play. This one may be harder for you to do, as I'm assuming due to the low number of posts you've made you are relatively "new" to playing Renpy games and how they "work" and can allow you to save multiple "paths" in the game WHILE playing the game. Without having "multiple paths" saved (or a MOD installed), there will be only ONE series of "saved data" the game uses to let you do things based on your previous choices.
Most people choose the easy way and install a MOD for the game. Hard core players use BOTH a MOD and create multiple paths if they've been drinking enough coffee to stay awake.

it will work from that point onwards. Previous scenes will not be shown at all. Our previous games had a simple path on / path off system for new scenes, which enables you to toggle on or off at any point forth and backwards as much as you like. Scenes simply will or woun't happen depending if you are on path or off path.
sorta, if you are on both auntie and mel path it'll backfire at 1 point in restaurant. xi, fi and mel path is just fine until day before last where needs to disable all other paths to get perfect ending but still need to cheat more points to melody to get that ending.
That was my experience using it in the past also. And when he asked and he said he was already half-way through the game, I figured he wouldn't actually accomplish what his question seemed to indicate he was trying to do...play all the girl's paths to see all their scenes, etc. So that is why I answered him the way I did.
