I
Hey there! I'm the writer for MercySide.

While the game does have more of a serious story and atmosphere, you'll be able to make (somewhat obvious) decisions in-game to avoid 'darker' twists and endings. Right now, there are two planned endings for each character along with a potential unlockable harem route. Each character will have a 'wholesome' ending where you can avoid murder, rape, violence, etc. That outline was a general idea for a potential route in the original game idea, prior to me entering the team as the writer.

Your curiosity about the game is appreciated! Feel free to direct any questions at me in this thread or on our discord. I think you'll enjoy it, as it's just a taste of what's to come. Regardless, thanks for showing interest and hopefully you understand me not wanting to spoil the story here.
I loved it when you said harem.

I just got an idea. From the description i gathered it would heavily focus on story. And best way to enjoy a story when people get emaarsed in the story. And what's better than a first person/Point of view(pov) angle for better emarssion?

From a development standpoint, I'm going to disagree with this for a very specific reason that I think a lot of devs don't consider. I currently write a gay VN, a genre where there is fairly high demand but very little games--particularly indie games like we would typically find on f95. One of the primary reasons I got so much attention with my game is because there's zero competition when I launched it back in 2017. That being said, many people that are looking for more content with guys are forced into playing straight games just because there's nothing else. It's kinda like if you wanted to watch porn but only straight stuff is on so you just look at the male characters. Those devs who make less attractive or become lazy with the construction of their male characters in games or do first person completely miss out on this demographic. In short, make a straight game with a hot male character in it and you can still tap into the gay demographic without even trying and probably have a larger user base.

Just my thoughts tho

hello I have a question if you don't mind I love the game so far and I'm really happy. dat. it has a harem

for people who like harem but what about people like me who prefer a much more romantic one girl only option

you know what I mean

if I like a girl I could choose to be with dat one girl and not cheat on her with any other girl

btw so far I really really like the mom

I've just finished playing for the 1st time. The setting reminded me among other things of 'The Vanishing' (1988) movie a little bit and - in terms of adult VNs - obviously of 'Summer's Gone', but 'MercySide' seems to be its own thing, which is good. For now the story seems to be on a simpler side; it's a nice start, but it felt to me slightly too uneventful, I think I'd prefer a longer 1st release to get more invested in the story from the get-go. I also hope that we'll have much more choices to make in the upcoming updates. It seems to me we'll be able to take MC into some interesting places and I'm looking forward to see how and where can we progress with him. As far as LIs are concerned I can't say they're my type looks wise (hope there'll be more options in the nearest future; although Liz or Talia would be my choice if noone else will join the cast), but the same is more or less true with 'Summer's Gone' and I like that VN quite a lot just for the story and dynamics between various characters, so the same may be true here. BTW is there an uncompressed version of the game anywhere?

Hmm, since the story will explore the MC's emotion and reactions, a 1st person POV is really quite awkward to use. We've decided to mostly use over-the-shoulder angle instead since we can easily track and pan the camera (or at least simulating camera movement) to whichever angle is most effective for a given shot without jarring jumps between shots (except for those times when we deliberately make clashing jumps)

Okay, that's something we honestly didn't consider, thank you very much for the input. I, personally, do not understand enough about the gay culture to design an honest (or at least non-exploitative) representation, but designing good characters is something we're very interested in, and we will strive to maintain that at the very least.

Good point. But you know constantly looking at your character's head or face doesn't give you that VR like vibe what a FP pov gives you. It feels like you are in control and seeing everything that unfolds around you with your own eyes. But, hey! You're the man.

Yeah, and to clarify: I'm not suggesting any gay stuff here or even doing an optional route for that. I don't know crap about the gay culture either--I'm still learning cause my ass has been in the closet my whole life, haha. So no judgement here. I'm just saying in general, anyone who does first person or gets lazy on the male character development in their straight games is probably missing out and they don't realize it. I actually got into this type of stuff from playing straight games like Big Brother a few years back because there weren't any other options out there. But when I played those games, I was mostly doing it for the male characters. I still play several games on here but if they're in first person or have unattractive male characters, I usually don't give them a shot at all. It doesn't take a lot to give the male characters some extra screen time if you're willing and sometimes there can be a big payoff for that. But also don't let other people tell you how to do your game. You're the ones spending thousands of hours per update so make sure you're enjoying what you have to look at during all that time.

Not much happened yet, but the characters and the story seem promising. The renders look good. I'm interested to see more. (y)

A few questions for the devs:

1. Standard RenPy interface allows keyboard navigation among buttons. Sometimes it's more convenient to press {Arrow left}, {Enter} than move your hand away from the keyboard, point and click the mouse. Would be nice if your buttons work like that too. (Check menu choices and exit dialog, for instance).

2. Also, the save screen made me a bit confused at first. It would make sense to keep it standard for RenPy, with those slots/screenshots.

3. Is that a sad story or a happy-end-like story? There are no tags for that, unfortunately.

4. I tried to UnRen the game to see the consequences of the choices; I usually do that, instead of using walkthroughs or when there is none. Your game seem to have unusual structure, so I felt lost and gave up after a few minutes of investigation. Could I still use UnRen like usual in the future, you know, to see "menu:" and the like?

Thank you, and good luck with the game.

Thank you for your interest.
There will be multiple endings, IMO the sad endings are just as good as the happy ones. I'll have a chat with NI.L.A for the other questions.

Thank you! And yes, "the sad endings are just as good", it's just some people want to experience harsh emotions sometimes, and some want to feel nice. I am one of the latter; I like to consume happy ending books/movies/games; otherwise I can feel shitty for the whole rest of the day. I hope you don't mind me... if there would be at least one version of happy ending, I'll just go get that. :p
