I had that same feeling at first but then I got it. At the top of your work screen you have the description of what you are supposed to do, you write a script. The purpose of that script is also described like "archive a log file into a new archive". Then you need to drag and drop the pieces of that script onto the spots for input and output, in this case "file read", "do", and "file to archive". When you press "end" the script is running and the cogs are turning if the script is correct. Otherwise you receive an error and a visual indication which part is not working. The different elements have different shapes which will help you with later tasks but in the first few they do have the same shape mostly so there's more ways to pick the wrong option.
You can btw roll back when you receive an error so you can start over and it is not counted as a failure.
No clue whether the time you spend has any impact on the payment you receive.

There is a scene replay, all who asked. Go to the little person shaped icon, farthest right. Brings up the character menu, you can scroll up and down in the columns and click a scene to replay it.

If the works computer is the error meaning you can't skip time then try loading your game go to settings Game-Advanced: and untick Mimi-games: And you just get to pick how long you work for.
