The latest saves are broken regardless you used a mod. You can try older saves from two or three releases back, for some those sometimes worked

I found that opening the 0.35 save and scrolling back 1 image and saving over the top of the save I was then able to open and play the game successfully in 0.36

unfortunately it didn't work for me. Seems that the code in v0.36 is totally different and breaks with any save from 0.35 (i tried several).
