My dude, I have a desktop, with a 5800x, a 3080, and 32 gigs of ram. If my computer is taking many seconds per page load, your game is badly made. Either you are mining some currency in the background, doing something else shady, or you need to go back to the drawing board. Any way it goes, I am going to have to say this game is a no go, since you wont even acknowledge that there is a problem. Good luck with your steaming pile.

Let’s clear up a few things.
  1. The game is an HTML file. That’s it. No mining, no shady background processes, so just open it up and check the code yourself if you're really concerned.
  2. It runs smoothly on my laptop (Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM), and plenty of others are playing it without issue. If your high-end rig is choking on it, something else is going on. It might be browser extensions, custom settings, or something local to your setup.
  3. I’ve already provided instructions, workarounds, and optimization tips before download and within the game. If you skipped that and ran into problems, that’s on you.
  4. As for “not acknowledging the issue” (sic!) I did, multiple times. It’s literally documented in the FAQ within the game. So maybe read what’s there before tossing accusations.

You’re free to pass on the game, of course because not everything’s for everyone.
But if you're going to call something a “steaming pile,” at least come correct with the facts.

Good luck out there.

You're making an HTML game in twine... We are far from GTA 5 here.

Sorry to say that your game is doomed to failure if you don't take the criticism and work on finding a solution.

Going around basically saying "I'm not the problem, you are!" is not a solution.

Like a great philosopher once said: "If everyone around you is crazy... It's probably not everyone, just you."
It's easier to start this project from scratch than to rewrite the entire game.

FYI, I provided the solution that worked for me and some other people.

1. It's an html file, sure. That means nothing as far as it not doing something shady. I shouldn't have to go through your code to check if it is doing something it shouldn't.
2. It's nice that it runs smoothly for you. What browser are you using? Have you tried playing it using any other browser? I ask, because I just attempted it again, using a browser I don't use, and it worked much better.
3. Your instructions are to clear the browsers local storage. My browsers local storage is empty, and it still runs bad on all but one browser.
4. You have not acknowledged it. You have just hand waved over it, saying "it is doing a lot in the background" and "some computers might not be able to run it". A part of game dev is optimizing so more people can run your game. Glossing over it and saying it will get worse is not helpful. The only part of the in game FAQ that even mentions lag is you talking about avoiding a bug with the time, and talks about using the fast travel to circumvent it. If you can use fast travel to avoid the bug, why even have anything but fast travel? Either, you need to fix that bug, or you need to scope back the open world bits.

thats a fine looking high horse, but doesnt change the fact that yours is the only twine game i've ever encountered that runs this badly. 2 second lag on every scene change is an insane achievement for an html game in 2025.

instead of being pissy about the people who are having trouble with your game, go fix it. a "workaround" isnt the same as a "fix".

if there is a massive turd on the floor, telling people to walk around it isnt a solution to the problem.

also stop asking people to fix your game for you either, do YOUR part first, then people can decide if its worth their time and effort to help you, since you are not offering to pay them for their help.

This game moves slower than a frozen shit in a dead penguin.
I have played for about an hour without seeing a single piece of ass.
I give this game about 6 months to live

I usually don't comment a lot on str8 games because i'm only interested in gay content, so i don't like to comment on a game when i'm only interested in like 5% of what the game offers.

When i found this game i already expected it to be mostly str8 with almost nothing of gay content, so i wasn't that disappointed, but i noticed the lag issue, and posted the solution to that issue here.

the fact that the dev still hasn't fixed the problem and has added those paywalls really says a lot about what kind of game this will be.

Hi,
Just wish to also mention that this game is very slow. I'm experiencing up to 3 second delay each click, say from down stairs corridor and click on Second Floor button.

It can't be a system issue I'm running a full desktop system with an ASUS TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS motherboard and 64GB of G.Skills Ripjaws Memory using an Intel I7 12700K cpu.

Also for your interest image attached is CPU usage / temp and Task Manager cpu usage and this is first run of firefox and your html is the only tab running.

As you can see it's virtually not impacting on CPU at all, but I still have 2 - 3 second delay for each click.

*edit*: Just compared your game to Gateway, which has a ~9MB html file and that uses less cpu time (~2% showing in task manager on clicks) and each click only take as long as the CSS transitions that are set. Your game I even edited the html and set all transitions to NONE and it made no improvement.

Or Back to Freedom which has a ~25MB html file and clicks are almost instant in that game. All running SugarCube.

Regards.

Ever since it was reported, I was wondering why it was happening since the game doesn't work differently from any other HTML games for me and I have no particular problem with it. I just hope those tips will help solve this issue which is starting to pollute the thread, instead of talking about the game itself.

I suppose you've skipped the introduction, didn't go around the house, didn't try any quest, didn't work, didn't train and didn't go to the strip club. Or maybe they are too much clothed to see their tits or asses.
I won't talk about the relationship system since I'm waiting for it to be fleshed out but it should work too at some point.

Good continuation.

Just tried it out and that massive delay between any and all choices was pretty bad. Around 10-12 seconds right from the start.
Considering I have an I9 with 32g ram this shouldn't be an issue.

I have seen a few heavy Sugarcube/Twine games in my time but this one takes the cake as the heaviest. Even Slavemaker 3 running for over 6 hours straight didn't lag this much even as it ate over 12gb's of ram on my old pc (dat browser version was leaky as heck). While this doesn't eat that much memory, it still rose from around 500mb to 1700mb after 20 minutes.

Now I did some quick testing and NoScript doesn't play well with this. Disabling it makes a huge difference. Delay dropped to around 1 second after disabling it.

Will shelf this for now but maybe I'll check back later to see if it runs any better. And maybe streamline the UI a bit. Played several games with similar movement and there's a tad too many clicks to get between places.

All these comments got me curious on WHY the lag was happening, when even the heavier Twine games I've played don't have that 2 second delay. Keep in mind, I am no Twine expert, and this is the first time I've ever even opened Twine in my entire life. The only thing I can do is look at it with my limited knowledge. If someone more knowledgeable than I corrects me, I welcome it. I am saying this so the dev can investigate and possibly improve performance, as it seems really bad when it shouldn't be.

Opening up this game in Twine, I see one thing that I don't see in the several others I opened. Massive if/else statements that run nearly every location change. Namely, familyCheck, bg, and professionUpdate. (Couldn't find the passage of that last one, but I assume it's setting locations). familyCheck and bg alone is 2700 lines of code. While that may not be the cause of the lag, it's certainly a indicator of inefficiency.

Now, I don't know how to fix this, nor am I really willing to research how, I was just curious what was happening under the hood. But those would be my first target for optimization, even if only for my own sanity. Massive if/elses are a nightmare. I would guess object-orientated coding would both perform better and not be such a pain to work with.

(I did see something about using the stylesheet and tags for backgrounds, that might help alleviate some of the lag.)

the reason for all the lag is because the game manages a lot of states, you can even see the difference in save sizes, this game has a max history size of 40, that means you can click on the back arrow to undo your actions 40 times, and each of these 40 times that you can return are saved in your save, which is saved on the memory of the browser.

if you max that history and then download your save, you'll see that the downloaded file is almost 1 MB, most twine games saves don't even get to 100 kb, if the dev either disabled the history or limited the history to 5 or 10 the game would run very faster

for those who want to see the difference, here's the html file for v0.3a with the Config.history.maxStates = 5, it will probably still be slow if you load a save from the original version of the game, but there's a huge difference just changing this
