A game of rare quality, featuring unique and custom graphics, and a gameplay rhythm that feels more or less unique to Mist.
Mist is one of the rare games on this site that manages to carve a unique identity for itself. First and foremost is the graphics, the first thing you see. Mist has unique models and art style, such as the ever present Mist. Hah. But seriously. The model's themselves have a unique texture/gloss to them that somehow looks like pores, sweat, and playdough at the same time. It sounds like a criticism, but it's actually pretty hot and I spend a lot of time looking at how the characters sort of glow in the renders.
The gameplay loop is pretty unique too, stretching out the limits of what Renpy can realistically do. I'd say my criticism is that things in Mist can feel rather slow, such as transitions, and animations, where you can be rapidly clicking and then all of a sudden it stops for 3 seconds, goes to a scripted animation, and then stops for 3 seconds before it returns. Maybe the loading is due to Renpy but it can sort of stop the game flow.
Compared to the other games that I rate 5/5, the story and characters are slightly weaker here. Characters establish themselves a bit worse, and at times where you'd expect to look into the Mist for more mystery and details, it can come up more hollow than expected, but it's not enough to be a large criticism.
What I say for other games holds true for Mist. The developer of Mist should be proud that from the start of the game, they had a vision in mind, and was able to execute their rather ambitious vision without losing track, and without falling into feature creep, or just burnout.
A bonus advantage to Mist is that while I feel that there are some things that can improved upon, the dev nailed the unique style and look that they are going for, which could carry them across several games, such as the previews released for their next project.
I for one am ready to jack off to more girls made of wet playdough.
