To be fair, AL has a terrible reputation for that (I'd never play it.)
I respect that. You don't want to forever lost a LI just because you didn't choose them. That's fair. In my opinion, it was brutal, yet it made sense storywise. You don't have to like AL to see that Monster College was killed by the dev.

Had a feeling this would be like nergals nest's urban demons and have updates after the game was "finished"

There is no pack, no harem, no nothing. Supposedly you can choose to be leader with a pack or give it up. But the endings are the same. Even as a leader, everyone effectively has the same ending. The "partner" has maybe 1 picture that is some variant with colorful, but meaningless text.

Game flew high, but crashed and burned with no meaningful effort to save something from the wreckage.
