Just unlocked the maze and finished my first run of that up but am a bit confused by the companions mechanic. I brought Emily and Katie along yet they seem to do nothing in combat as far as I can tell. Hovering over their icons I see numbers for what I assume are requirements to activate them. But after fulfilling all 3 on either they still appear to do nothing. Clicking on their portraits like in Love of Magic doesn't work. Is this mechanic broken or am I just missing something?

Most of them have 3 tiers of abilities, each ability takes X number of gem matches to activate.
Mouse over their heads to see what abilities they have, then click on the ability to activate.
