But the story itself could become interesting

actually both games are very good, both visually and storywise. but as you said both are suffering from same 2 problems: slow updating with very short playtime. that is why i was (and still am) concerned when this project started no matter of dds.
dds, as 1st project, is very complex choice based project (like eva kiss games) where dev is doing slow job. right now i'm not sure is it because of dev's problem with development or something else. but when dev started this project, while updating of dds was already problematic, it was (from my pow) red alert. usually, when you already have one game with mentioned issues, starting new project means you are either in tech/creativity problems with 1st game or you are going into milking business (or maybe both). anyway it is pushing of new project just to hide issues of older one.
to conclude, dev needs to put this one onhold until dds is finished. that way updates should be more frequent with more playable content. if dev is serious interested in developing this projects. not to forget, when people are supporting you fiancially, you need to be more commited to prime project

I don't think this is really eating any significant amount of dev time.

This has potential but I think that might be all it ever is when there is <5 minutes of story added every 6 months.
