You can have as many points as you would like, as they are removed from the plot. All story hinges on is MC meeting various people and accomodate to their abilities while he shcmoozes them over to his side in the social studies.
For the longest of times, there was a hold up in even getting any points at all, where it was gated by meeting this many times the girl who does the enhancements and then meet her at some specific time of day and keep doing it over weeks.
Just like any game mechanic prone to hoarding points just because, things you need for plot reasons are way over in the achievements department and rather light in the inverntory poulation department.
