Don't know if I should play this or not. Can you guys lmk if this isn't my type of game? Things that disinterest me:
  • Main character is a goody-two-shoes pushover.
  • Player engagement is absolutely minimal.
  • Can't reject the LIs.
Thanks for your suggestion!
That is what the reviews purpose are so go read some of them, you can ask here but just the first item of your uncheck box is so subjective that I lost the interest to reply an answer and that is probably why you got a snarky reply haha.

I'm pretty sure NiiChan picked My Bully Is My Lover as the title just to lure in some weirdos expecting a revenge and abuse story — despite none of that being anywhere in the tags.

Just so they can get their expectations shattered later. Honestly, the guy thinks of everything. :WeSmart:

Fair enough. I don't think any of them are broad. If the MC doesn't stand up for himself at all - he's a pushover. Can't reject LIs is as objective as it gets, and player engagement refers to whether or not there is much player input, or will it be the same as watching a show.
I did try to read some reviews, but none of them tended to answer those questions. I stopped. It isn't unrealistic to expect people who have played this game to be able to answer those in a brisk.

What you are asking is just my opinion, about the MC I mostly agree with this review analysis that is inside a spoiler box in that same review so maybe you missed it, if you consider it those 2 derogatory terms you mentioned then I won't agree.

There is input enough for an harem game and for what I can remember you can reject the LIs, I don't play games to reject LIs usually, I check all paths unless it is really a horrible person as a LI. What I can say is if you played Eternum or Ripples before and like those games then you will like this one, I play it because it has a great story and even if was kinetic with this story I would watch it (not play since it would be kinetic haha).

Okay, i will try to answer your questions seriously because im in a good mood.

- You can reject everyone
- player engagement is average but mostly yes/no to LI's, giving "good answers" to get rps and one big decision between alternate single LI ending (which is awesome) or mainstory
- MC is a goody two shoes and forgiving (towards pretty girls at least, guys are fucked) yet ambitious.

Spoiler about the "Bully's": They were victims and forced to behave like that so MC being forgiving towards them doesnt even matter because they never did something really wrong and were just kids under cruel pressure.

You can just try it, there is a certain early choice and when you cant endure to not close the door you know its not for you. If you close the door the game ends early for you and thats fine too.

So let me get this straight… you’re out here complaining about how the protagonist acts — or doesn’t act — without even playing the game? And it’s not like the goal is to play some vengeful, cold, or bitter guy. The whole point is literally the opposite: a character who tries to understand, process, and even forgive.

Funny how some people absolutely freak out if the protagonist doesn’t fit into that archetype of the bitter, traumatized, revenge-driven guy — like every game is somehow obligated to follow that same tired formula.

And just to be clear: yes, you can reject the girls. It’s in the game, it’s in the system, it’s part of the choices.

Still not sure if it’s worth playing? Simple. Play it. If you don’t like it, just uninstall. No drama.

I totally agree with everything else, but I want to note that you can also play CDs and DVDs, and it hardly gets more kinetic than that. So although it certainly doesn't harm to use distinctive language, there is also nothing wrong with talking about playing kinetic visual novels.

I read some kinetic AVNs before but none have as good stories as any of the games in my tier S list and some have more input and others less but I wouldn't say it they are totally kinetic, that is not what makes me enjoy them anyway, just like a book or movie/tv show where I don't have any input.

So basically what I search is good stories, the sex scenes for me are just a bonus, my input just make it to be a game with different paths but I still check most of them. And it doesn't matter what medium it is, a book, a visual novel with A or without A, a movie or a tv show as long it meets the quality I require and for my taste.

Edit: What I meant with "my input just make it to be a game with different paths but I still check most of them" is that i never immerse/insert myself totally into the story/MC, of course I engage a bit more than in kinetic mediums but still my stand is for the most part as a 3rd party observer just like when watching a movie or reading a book.

Brother, you live in a La La Land where everyone is trying to attack you, or the AVNs you hold so dear.
I never complained about this game at all. Don't believe me? Re-read everything I said. It was your interpretation that led you to believe that ME asking whether a game is for me or not was 'complaining'. Sounds hugely insecure.

And what's actually funny is how you're praising the game for teaching its players to be understanding & forgiving. But then you go stereotyping me and start projecting buncha fallacies about 'revenge' or what not. Guess you are only good for preaching, not practice. huh?
It's not a revenge game, says so in the description, and I never asked if it was. It's amazing what lack of self-awareness does to a person.

I really like the last two sentences you made, but the rest could've been cut, dontcha think?

Something I’ve always wanted to talk about is how the Visual Novel medium is still treated. A lot of people look at VNs and reduce the entire genre to “interactive porn.” And yeah, unfortunately, it’s true that a considerable number of them really are just that. But “a lot” doesn’t mean all, and it definitely doesn’t make it the rule.

Both My Bully Is My Lover and many other VNs use this format to tell stories that go far beyond just 18+ content. There are absolutely brilliant works out there, true masterpieces in storytelling, like Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, Chaos;Head, Subahibi, Tsukihime, and many others.

Personally, I always try to look for something that’s short, impactful, but still manages to showcase just how powerful this medium can be. I absolutely love massive VNs like Utawarerumono and White Album 2, but I totally understand that a 75-hour visual novel — especially one that takes forever to really pick up, like My Bully, which has a pretty long prologue — is gonna turn a lot of people away before they even get to the good parts.

And this brings me to something really important: whenever we consume any form of media — whether it’s a game, a show, a movie, or a book — the right thing to do is judge it based on what it sets out to be, not on what we wanted it to be. And that’s exactly why so many people take one quick look at My Bully, turn up their noses, and dismiss it as shallow, mindless, or whatever nonsense they’ve convinced themselves of — when in reality, it’s one of the most self-aware stories I’ve ever played.

I'll try to answer you in the most respectful way possible.

Alright, let’s break it down. First of all, nobody here is “living in La La Land” or feeling attacked by absolutely anything. But yes, there’s a very clear difference between simply asking whether a game is for you… and throwing a bunch of loaded questions filled with biased assumptions — the kind that already carries that subtle tone of judgment disguised as innocent curiosity. And yes, whether you want to admit it or not, that tone shows.

If your intention was really just to ask, your questions would’ve sounded like: “Does the game have meaningful choices?”, “Can you reject characters?”, or “Is the protagonist more passive or proactive?”. Simple, direct, honest. But that’s not what happened. You came in throwing words like “If the MC doesn't stand up for himself at all - he's a pushover,” “lack of agency,” and all that — in a way that, let’s be honest, sounds way more like criticism than genuine curiosity from someone who actually wants to understand.

And that’s exactly why I replied the way I did. Anyway, since moderation will probably step in and lock this discussion soon, I’ll just leave it here. Good night. (y)

Why is this entire conversation even going on. There is a karen out here barking just so that she can grab some attention which she doesn't get in real life from anyone.
I am sure she does the same shit on other threads too as she is so miserable in her real life.
Just ignore her and she will go away on her own after some more barking .

I just started the game, and I want to ask, when should I expect the quality to improve? Just so I can keep my expectations in check.
