At the time, middle 80's, it was obligatory for every male to go to military service. Some could post pone it (knowing that nothing would save them from going, not even being tetraplegic), others could get refused by medical reasons (serious ones) and some could get out of it by being or pretending to be gay (this would be marked on their records forever, records that at the time were needed to be presented at any job application, so basically they were outing themselves everywhere, not much of a problem now, but a serious thing back then, since it could be grounds for recusing the job immediately). For example a teacher could NEVER have that on it's records, it would be worse than if he had been in jail for murder.
So, the easiest way was to go do the 8 months "service" and move on with your life. Or, actually finishing HS and be forced to serve for 18 months, in the lowest of Sergeants class... hoping you liked it enough to make you take a commission for 5 years.
I was forced into this one, but, hated it so much that I couldn't wait for the 18 months to end. Never been able to wear green or brown (our uniforms colors at the time) ever again. Or eat squids or any other cefalopod after. (This needs further explaining, I'll put it in a spoiler). I had a serious eating disorder at the end of those 18 months. I weighted 55 kg with my 1,87m tall body, when I was discharged, it went down still for a few months, I simply couldn't eat... well anything... I had to relearn to eat... starting with baby food... my first real meal was almost a year later at my 23rd birthday. I also managed to cut my coffee and tobacco intake, when I left I was drinking 15 expressos a day and smoking 4 packs, besides relearning to sleep. All this because I almost killed a man. I had his life on a small contraction of my right index finger. And I would probably be commended for it... I still have nightmares with it.

Maybe I'm trying to replicate the spectacular experience I had in SL, but, I really haven't been able to refuse anyone in any Harem Game. I may, and have, refuse some kinks, but even in games that I do find very hard to like some of the characters (like Karlson's Gambit) I can't say no... there's the ghost of the possible redemption path always haunting me. With Alexia, there isn't the opt out choice because she can become pregnant the very moment you start the relationship with her.
