I lost mine 24 years ago. There's not have been one single day of those years that I haven't missed her dearly. It took more than 10 years to be able to stop the reflex to call her every time something good happened. A song on the radio, a book on a bookstore, a movie, something cute my kids had done, a joke my wife told me, a new dish... something... anything...
Seriously, if you still have it, treasure them. The world is so much darker after they leave.

Glad things are going better for you and your mother. I took care of my mother for the last 14 months of her life. Even with all my years as a paramedic it was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life.
