Oh ooh... I pulled out the good keyboard... Ready? Ready...
I'll try to organize this as best I can:
1- Having Preferences - I was a bit taken aback by the phrase "You have your preferences that's fine" as if ANYONE needed your approval, or permission or whatever to exist. No one has anything to say about anyone else's having preferences. We may joke about them, shake our head in disbelief mockingly, but, having a preference is as innate to everyone as it is to you. No one needs authorization to have them. They were born with that right. Presuming that you even have the authority to approve of that right is arrogance taken to extremes. Not only that, by saying that, anything else you may have had to say about the subject as Zero value.
2- Making Choices - We all make choices. Constantly. Right now I am making the choice to write this. Others will make the choice to read it or not. In regards to My Dorm, I made one single choice of importance: All. That's it. I want all the women, all the relationships, all the (possible) pregnancies, all the romantic dates, all the VERY hot sex scenes, all the moving back stories. Others, have made the choice to complicate their lives. I pity the fools. But it is their prerogative to sing "Oops, I did it again" like a virgin. It may seem that ALL isn't a choice, but it is. It is even a conscious one that needs to be repeated. Over and over I chose: All.
3- Placing limits - People establish limits, borders, frontiers... Ways to say, from this point on.... this and that. Some players in My dorm, play the game with ONE LI. I have no clue how they do it. I even heard of people playing with Zero. I fail to understand why. Does that mean that they were wrong? No. It means that they set limits. Limits that they respect and enforce.
4- "Living" a story - Good writers, manage to "immerse" you into their fantasy world, making you "live" their story. Yes, we all know that it isn't really alive, but, for the duration of that slice of time where you are transported into a different world, it may as well be "Real". Be it the graphics, the music, the words, the emotions they evoke, or our own feelings creating the illusion, together, the Dev, the work and us, create an illusion. One where we are in Martha's arms. Cradled by Olivia care. Embraced by Norah's affections. Or... Or... Or... and we may still be in our chair, in front of a screen, but, we are also listening to Lisa talk about her passions, even if we've never heard her voice.
Fanning the winds of Illusions, is a much better name for the Profession of Game Creator. In my absolutely not humble opinion.
Welcome to my Ted Talk.
