You know, I only have one thing to say to that.

I was surprised by that, too. I'm not an American (or a hunter), but I knew about hunter orange (through movies), and I didn't want The Hunter to wear it, so I researched it to find if there was a loophole. The loophole wasn't even needed! There's no mandatory orange!Who says you can't learn anything from VNs? The fact California doesn't mandate hunter orange was shocking enough to me that I looked it up to confirm. The most nanny state ever, yet no hunter orange or harness mandates...
Too bad you guys still have so many hunting restrictions and State interference despite the growing hog problem over there. CA really is nonsensical in a lot of ways.
Alaska - where both guns and hunting are far more common - doesn't mandate it either. There's no mandatory orange!
For a European who has been to the US for only three days in his life (work reasons), your legal system is as dark and convoluted as it can be. Incest, hunting, or divorce laws, or the Miranda warning (to name a few I researched) are too different between states (or even local jurisdictions) even to look like New Jersey and Illinois are in the same country.Alaska - where both guns and hunting are far more common - doesn't mandate it either.
It strikes me as a slightly silly law anyway. It's the other people (besides the guy with the gun) who need to worry, right?![]()
Note too that this California isn't 100% our California. Arnold running for governor 4 years early changed a lot of things (like drinking age, or mandatory teaching of the Metric System*) through chaos theory.
* You will notice that young Californians in the game (Alexia/Maddie age and below) use metric while other characters (older Californians and people from other states) use imperial.
Even OUR media doesn't get Miranda right. The arresting cop doesn't have to read them to you.the Miranda warning (to name a few I researched) are too different between states (or even local jurisdictions) even to look like New Jersey and Illinois are in the same country.
Yes, I know the whys and hows of that happening, but I can only guess the nightmare it would be to write a book set in the US in the pre-Internet era for someone not living there without messing something up.
It's mostly about hunting pressure - areas with a lot of hunters per square mile. That's when mistaken for game accidents happen. California is one of the medium hunting pop States (about .7 hunters per square mile). Alaska has a tiny hunter pop for its size and very little hunting pressure (about 5x less than CA). Where I hunt is about 2x the pop per square mile as CA, and I'd never not wear orange. Except once I'm up in the treestand anyway. Then it's nap time with a good ebook. Maybe some snoring to ward off predators. My master plan is to get deer to feel attracted to snoring, so eventually I'll wake up with them gathered round when I'm ready to head back.Alaska - where both guns and hunting are far more common - doesn't mandate it either.

Above numbers are also the average, and the first weekend of rifle season, bucks only, other dates throughout the season have WAY more hunter turnout. I've seen cars lining the road every 100 yards for 10 miles inside a WMA opening weekend plenty of times.
