I've not seen comments specifically saying you can't be both (though I admit to skimming some of the posts...), I think it was just Sunshine pulling out of Vivian that Hutch wasn't both. She says "You have no idea how many days I have to teach up to make this much money!" - so we don't know how much her payment is, just that it's a lot more than she was expecting. I would suggest it's less than a year's pay though, because she would be more likely to say something like "That's nearly as much as I make in a year through teaching!" or something similar that equates to the values.

Wife's question to boss was whether he tried to convince husband to leave her and get a divorce. He did not actually do that.
The reason wife asked that was because husband convinced her to continue with the relationship with boss. Boss did not
convince her to do that.

Over time, as boss' conversation with wife at the end of chpt 2 makes clear, boss will have to accept the continued presence of husband in wife's life, even though boss might have wished it to be otherwise.

In fact I think that boss/wife conversation helped define the relationship going forward for both of them.

With that in mind, perhaps she was surprised, thinking that Hutch will be coming home with a lot more than she expected.

These numbers are fictional, just to make for easy calculations, but say Hutch now gets $1000/month, so $12000/year, and Vivian's payment here is $3000. If she doesn't expect to receive as much as Hutch, but she sees $3000, she would likely be surprised, as that could mean Hutch getting $36000/year. She asks, incredulously, "WOW.
