Does any of you know what's wrong with my save files? I can't seem to load it in the game, the save doesn't appear when I choose continue at the main menu

Most likely in your persistent save file is no entry for file1. it is the only file (for the save games information) loaded when the game is started. From what is in there, the "continue" option is on or off and it decides, what is showm upon opening the continue-option.
Cut the file out of the saves-directory and put it anywhere else to keep it sage. Then start the game and save the game after the beginning to slot 1. close the game, put the cut file back in the saves folder and start the game again. Then load the file and continue the game from the saved part.
