What you described is a "shemale", they are not the same .

Correct but seen from the outside it is somewhat understandable that they get mixed up.
Both are at the most outwardly visible level a female figure with tits and a dick.
There are differences but those are not visible at a glance. The most obvious of them is that Futa often have no visible balls but a pussy. Depending on the artist of course.
That plus in the real world pretty much only "shemale" openly exist so there is no real RL experience with Futanari.

Perhaps the trans Morgan is canon, perhaps not. But since it is optional content, it makes sense from a marketing point of view to use the non-trans version of her in sample shots and renders.

That's one thing I did not even recognize about the picture.
True it is big but then again so is the MC plus he and his family is rich so there's no reason why the beach towel couldn't be hand tailored to specifications.
And it does not seem to be that much out of spec for a beach towel either.

I dunno if there are assets for them, but swim skirts are a popular choice in the community and would easily let you keep things ambiguous without having to worry which swimwear render you use on which route.

For me, the canon version is the opposite. I think the best thing is that everyone considers the version they like best as canon. The content is optional, so you can actually choose whether or not you want it in the game.

I think the term your actually looking for is "Beach Blanket", they were quite large, (some as big as 10'x9'), and used, to accommodate groups, sunbathing on the beach .

Google it, and you'll see what I'm talking about. There are several images there. They are still obtainable to this day.
They became popular in the mid 60's, especially after a few/series of beach movies, such as "Beach Blanket Bingo", circa 1965.
