Not sure what you would call it bad writing, but IMO dev is doing a good job here. It is a lineal experience, yes but that has more to do with whimsical tone it has going on which is a great fit to the art, and in the worldbuilding department is where it probably were it gets extra points, pretty organically before you get to meet the LI you get to know that we're not in Kansas anymore, humans are rare, and MC was dragged into the story bc there is a book making waves and a human is the main topic and he happens to be one of those rare humansI 100% disagree... the writing is actually bad and the story is not even there... you just get invited to literally fuck around. The only good thing it has going for it is the Art. Sorry to say but People like you are a complete mystery to me... just throw something half nice at you and you people think its the Holy Grail.
EDIT: As an example for bad writing, the excrutiating dump of exposition right in the beginning, that made me quit the first time i played, i had to literally force myself to read past through the chore.
I would also disagree when you call the introductory part of the game excruciating info dump, because it makes sense for a character that is foreign to the kingdom to ask questions, and more importantly it is skippable and won't change the experience in the game moving forward, you could just do that and brute force the mini-games if is not your liking
