First of all, the population only goes down when the boss invades. Those are the only missions you need to do regularly if you want to keep the population up, and those are the ones you need to do with Kana. How often do I need to do exorcist missions during the night? I do want to see the scenes in town and I can't do that if I have to do these exorcist missions all the time. It said that if I fail in increasing the exorcist rate the population would go down. Is there a downside to that? Will I get a game over and have to start again?
Aside from that, normal night exorcism is what raises the exorcism rate and you don't have to take Kana with you on these, which leaves her free to be molested/fucked/whatever by L. You can't see what's happening directly anyway, so it doesn't really matter if you're there or not when it happens. Well, for most of it anyway.
As for how much to do this stuff, well, you want to raise the exorcism rate for each location to the max and unlock all of the town locations first. Once you have everything and did all the side-quests (and likely got the apartment for the couple), then you can honestly just ignore it. As far as I'm able to tell, even if the exorcism rates drop down again because of the boss, it doesn't affect already unlocked locations in any way, nor does it affect your ability to get any of the endings.
There's no bad ending from ignoring Night exorcism.
