Yeah I can see that mine always yells at me for smoking I haven't told him how much coffee I drink when he asks I just say couple cups. There is a patio area on the second floor where everyone goes, not supposed to smoke but try to say that to a couple of hundred vets that do smoke and see what happens next.

I always imagined this was something we'd get a story line of in the future. Obviously their dad died, but what of the mother? Maybe she lost her mind and went back to the woods? Or maybe she works two jobs? Or maybe she's just a dead beat? Or maybe they have two different mothers that just live on the otehr side of the island and it's a big nothing. How big is the village for that matter?

The coffee thing can change. Coffee can be good for old people to help them fall asleep. Blood flow to the brain is often not as good in old age, which can lead to sleep problems. Coffee can help here and shorten the time it takes to fall asleep.
