Like the more people that worship him, the stronger he gets?
Well, the first time we visit Maia, she mentions it. She says that the more worshippers or believers a deity has, the stronger it becomes. But when a deity loses followers or a cult is lost, the deity weakens, dies or disappears. That's why I think the island's arch was created; as another comment said, the tribe girls' cult could be key or help the MC's ascension. Although the MC already had people who believed or trusted him (Rin, Eliza, Silfide, Kira, Perla, etc.), it wasn't enough for the protagonist to ascend. Maia told Lucido when he went to visit her that she felt the MC's first ascension was near; what if that's what they're trying to hint at?

if this is the plan then it changes my opinion on the whole arch

Yes, that's what Maia says the first time we visit her; when the MC wants to find a solution to Eliza's vampirism. Check the words she says, when you are in that part of the story. Also check what Maia says to Lucido, when he goes to visit her.

Why, it changes nothing ? The arc is still +90% filler and unimportant side girls...
In fact, I prefer filler to the developer abandoning the game. I've played several games labeled "Superpowers" or "Magic," and believe me, many developers abandon them. Here are a few examples: Genesis, Bite: Season One, The Falling Reloaded, Valkyrion Rising, among others. They had the potential to be good games, but they were abandoned. Well, I don't know if they're abandoned, but they haven't been updated for several months or maybe years.

Buu isn't gonna abandon this, hell, he has renders built up until March of next year. Doesn't change the fact that most of this island arc was filler content. If we cut out all the random sex (and stuck to sex with people that will apparently matter like Echo, the goddesses, and occasionally Pearl), we'd already be back in the capital, ignoring Taron more.

I feel like it was - well not really abandoned, just set aside for a long time, like Buu went "well, I can't just have them go kill Taron, that's too easy. I know, I'll have them play a different game for most of a year, and then come back to the plot.

"he has renders built up until March of next year." how many of those are just recycling old renders tho

Beats me. I complain about that every time it happens (which is almost every other update at this point). It also explains how he can have such a backlog of renders built up.
I first noticed it in the castle arc when some of the sex scenes were almost the exact same sans some extra dialogue. It happened again in the island arc, twice.

Edit- I'm wondering if it will be addressed in the revamp but not holding my breath.

Well, I was just saying that some developers leave their games abandoned. Well, I'm in no hurry to go back to the capital if all the MC does is have bodyguard missions, or scenes with Eliza in the room. To be honest, some scenes in the capital are the ones that bore me; but let's see how it is in the redesign of the game (I haven't played the redesign yet, I'm waiting for v5.9).

5.9 is the redesign. Makes my decision not to play 5.8 really great in hindsight.

Well yeah, many games get abandoned for various reasons. The most common is probably the devs expect making good money with a couple of releases, just that this happens only extreme rarely, then there is character and branching bloat, all kind of irl problems etc.
For the falling reloaded the dev went from a lucifer style MC out of revenge, to a completely doormat and added college theme, made all the main LI's unlikeable and as that wasn't well recieved he was going on a anti pirate crusade which he spent more time on than developing his game...

The thing is, if the dev is out of ideas, or wrote himself into a corner, filler content won't change anything, it will merly prolong the time until he abandons it. Also i'm not against filler content, i like nice scenes with the LI's (the main ones), but the ratio in this arc is so screwed it's just too much for me to enjoy.
For example, the MC actually training the girls (and himself), searching for Taron (who is well hidden) and spending some quality time with the girls would have been all good in my books and it would have actually conveyed the feeling that they are preparing and actively trying to bring down Taron.

Well Taron is no fool and he's not going to let himself be found so easily. I imagine that the search for Tarón, will be for almost at the end of the game. On the other hand, the girls and the MC's companions are training. I imagine that when the MC returns to the capital, Eliza will tell him about the training they have had, and he (MC) will be able to check how strong Eliza and the others have become.
