In quite a few cases, the problem is not the government, but Steam, who refuses to do the age verification correctly. Valve simply says "we don't want to bother with this" and denies the access.Depends ob the country

Not really. In Germany porn and most violent games are for age 18+ accessable. The vendor has only to make sure, the buyer is of age. So nothing different to other countries. The German government just asks to check via a official source with a birth date on it, e.g. the pass. Every vendor sticks to it, but Valve refuses to abide by it, because they think it's too bothersome. And as far as I can tell, it's the same for Brazil. There might be other countries, too, that I don't know. So basically, Valve is the problem. And no, simply asking your birth date is not making sure that you're of legal age, because you can choose whatever.
AKA: Stupid rules. Like I'm handing my ID to a buncha ppl online. Maybe do your own damn job and monitor your own damn kids. It's not corporations jobs to make sure YOUR kids aren't watching porn in YOUR home.
Completely agree. Why should you hand over all your credentials (in some cases even a scan of your ID card, with some things blurred out), while identity theft is a real big problem these days. Especially since even the smallest data breach can leak out enough stuff to make criminals very, very happy.
