Damn, 800 renders for a scene, that's massive, and especially considering that almost every render pictures lot's of chars (based on previews at least).

I'm hoping it's all come out well. I won't know for sure until I play it through for the first time. I wanted to try and make sure that it felt like the big party that it is, so there's a fair amount of background things going on. That's also partly why I'm excited about the new computer, too, because the new graphics card I'll be getting will allow me to put even more characters into scenes moving forward to hopefully make the world feel even more alive. Because at the moment I am a little restricted on these big scenes with how many characters I can put in at once. There are a lot of conversations in the scene that I positioned deliberately so that I could get away with not having to show people in the background, too. I'm hoping I balanced it well enough that everything still feels like a big party despite me having to optimize around my hardware a little.Damn, 800 renders for a scene, that's massive, and especially considering that almost every render pictures lot's of chars (based on previews at least).

Hello! A hopefully exciting little update for you all.
I'll probably talk more on this in the dev log later this month, but as a quick note: I now have my new computer, and have run a test render to compare the times. I took the last render I completed with my old pc, and re-rendered it with my new one.
The old computer rendered it in roughly 1 hour 25 minutes (85 minutes)
The new computer did it in just 16 minutes 44 seconds (17 minutes)
I am genuinely fucking shocked and wish I'd done this earlier. Holy fucking shit this is so much quicker. I knew my old PC was relatively slow with render times, as I'd compromised on speed in favor of having more VRAM when I bought it about three years ago. But the new system being legitimately 5x quicker slightly shocks me. I knew it'd be better, and I had hoped for that level of performance but I didn't actually expect it to do it.
And as a bonus, I'll show you the render itself. It's not anything too special, but take it as an extra preview I guess.

A few previews attached below as usual.
Some good news to start of this month's dev log. I now have the new computer I mentioned getting in the last dev log. I've only had it less than a week now, but it has massively increased my productivity. The render times of the new machine are legitimately 5x quicker than my old computer*, which I'm also still keeping so I'll be working with two at the same time. This is going to vastly speed up how quick I'm able to get updates out. I can't say yet how much longer it'll take to finish ch3, but it's going to come a hell of a lot quicker now. (*the raw numbers from my test comparison was that my old computer completed a render in ~85 minutes while the new one completed the same render in 17 minutes. A crazy difference.)
Some more good news: I've finally finished the big party scene of ch3. Every scene from here on out in the chapter is a smaller, less crowded scene, which will also make working through them a lot smoother, and therefore quicker. The big scene ended up being over 800 renders, which, for reference, is over half the size of chapter 1. So it took a long time to make, but there should be a lot of content there for you to enjoy.
I'm hoping that in the next dev log, once I've had a solid month of working with the new equipment I'll be able to give somewhat of an estimation on how long's left to go before chapter 3.

A lot of previews this month (attached below), as I've been working through a bunch of different scenes that are worth showing glimpses of.
Now that I've gotten through the big party scene of ch3, working through the smaller scenes and conversations has been quite refreshing. It feels like I'm making a lot more progress when I'm able to tick things off of my scene list with more regularity.
The render count for ch3 is now over 1800. How many renders will the chapter contain once complete? I haven't got a concrete answer, but I can ballpark it. I'm going to guess it'll break 3000. So let's say there's another 1200 renders to make. With my new computer, now that I've had a month of working with it, I would estimate that's about two months of work.
With that being said, I'm going to (hesitantly) guess at a July release for chapter 3. I'll be able to better assess this prediction in the end of May dev log, but at my current rate of progress I think 600 renders in a month is doable, as long as I've got the time to dedicate to putting the work in. Previously, I was bottlenecked by my render speed, so there was only so many renders it could actually do in a day, but now I'm able to work more on setting the renders up to make the most of the new hardware and the render speed it can provide, knowing that it's no longer taking 40 minutes to an hour per image.
Naturally, I want to get the update out as soon as I can. I'm hoping that my two month guess (as things stand right now) isn't too optimistic, but you never know.

Yeah, the advantage of working on smaller scenes is getting to work with a wider variety of characters and locations, and therefore having more varied previews, which I think is always preferableSome really nice previews there. A good mix of some of the girls we haven't seen for a while.

It has been some time since the last one. But I feel fairly confident in saying that the wait between ch1 and ch2, and now between ch2 and ch3 will be the longest gaps between releases. Every update after this one should be significantly quicker. I'd be very surprised if there's another year long wait for ch4 onwards, unless something dramatic changes of course.Previews looking good there, as usual. Last month was fairly productive. The render count for the chapter is now around 2200. In the previous dev log, I estimated I'd be able to around 600 renders a month, but I ended up a bit below that theoretical target this month, as a lot of them took more work than average to produce. Also, the early part of the month was spent on a scene containing Ava, whose model is by far the slowest rendering. Even on the new computer, renders containing Ava take around an hour per image. That's still an improvement on the previous 4-6 hours it used to take, but I digress. Even though this month ended up slightly below the render count I'd hoped for, I still think my 'some time in July' release date is fairly accurate, as the rest of the render work will be quicker.
Now that we're close to the end of the dev cycle, I'm better able to give numbers on what's left to do. I have 8 scenes left to make renders for, and I've roughly approximated how many renders I'll need for each scene. The total is 750. Some of the scenes will be quick to work through, as they're mostly static conversations, but there's a couple that tend to need more work on a per-render basis. All things considered, I think by the next dev log I'll be very close to the end of the rendering for the chapter, which would put the release date into view.
Thanks again for your patience. I'm really excited to get chapter 3 out there, I'm really enjoying what I'm making at the moment and I hope that's reflected in the work once you get the chance to play.

What's good, y'all. Currently in the process of re-rendering a whole bunch of images because I've found a fix to a problem I used to have to do manually in post. Not interesting stuff, but it's menial background work that'll last a few days, SO ... I wanted to do something hopefully a little bit fun here.
About 6 months ago, I did a little thing where I said if you give me a character's name, I'll give you a preview render with that character. You guys seemed to enjoy that, and I did too. So I figured why not do it again, now that we're six months further into development and I've got a lot more renders to pick from. That being said, some characters may have barely featured in that time, but I going to hesitantly assume I'll be able to find something you've not seen yet no matter what character you pick (... even if they're just featured in the background somewhere).
Also, if you want to do almost a dice roll like we did last time, pick any number up to about 2500 (between 800 and that if you just want a roll at stuff I've done since the last time I did this) and you'll get to see whatever render corresponds to that number. Like I said last time, what're the chances it's a big spoiler? Maybe we'll find out.
