Hmm, 1st time I'm experiencing problems running the included "exe" - it states: It requires Win10 - anyone with same issue?
I updated the Ren'Py SDK, which now requires Windows 10 or later. I honestly didn't expect anyone to still be using older versions of Windows. I'll roll back to a previous SDK for the free update coming in around two weeks.

Should you really? I mean, RenPy 8.4 now is the supported version, previous ones aren’t, if you roll back it’s likely saves made with 0.4.0 won’t open with an older SDK as the save file format has changed, and realistically how many people don’t use Windows 10 or 11?

I tested it on my system, and my old saves work fine. There haven’t been any compatibility-breaking changes, just a change in supported operating systems:
  1. Ren'Py now requires Windows 10 or later to run. This means that it will no longer run on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.
  2. Ren'Py now targets Ubuntu 20.04. This also means it targets the "soldier" version of the Steam Linux Runtime.
  3. Ren'Py is no longer built for 32-bit ARM Linux. This drops support for the Raspberry Pi 3, and very old Chromebooks. Ren'Py is still being built for 32-bit ARM Android. Ren'Py will now prefer the gles2 renderer on ARM Linux devices, such as the Raspberry Pi.
  4. The Android version of Ren'Py is now being built with 16KB pages, for future Android devices that will require 16 KB page support.
Before releasing the update, I'll test it on other devices as well, just to be sure, but nothing should break. I'd prefer to stick with the previous version so more people can enjoy the game, especially since nothing seems broken based on my initial testing. You're right that the percentage of users on older systems is very low, but I'd still prefer to maintain compatibility rather than focus on performance improvements, if they are minimal.

I'll likely upgrade to the newer SDK for the next game (sandbox), as the performance gains will be more useful there and there will be more improvements made to Ren'Py till I start the next project.

hello

You're not the only one with this problem, and for me, this isn't the first game where this exact thing happens after an update!

RenPy SDK 8 should no longer work with Windows 7, although the cause could well be Python.
RenPy SDK 7 uses Python 2, and RenPy SDK 8 uses Python 3. However, Python 3 still works with Windows 7 up to version 3.8.10.
So it's possible to continue developing projects with RenPy SDK 8 + Python 3.8.10, and they will remain Windows 7 compatible.

I have no explanation as to why developers absolutely have to change the development environment within a project, and I hope that more games won't follow suit.

hello

i´m still using win7u and i really hope i´m not the only one around.

i´m no developer, but as far as i know, if you use renpy 8 with python 3.8.10 it should be ok with win 7.
python 3.9 or 3.10 and higher requires win10.
just tested: renpy-8.3.7-sdk can be started with win7,
renpy-8.4.1-sdk needs win10.

for now your changes means GAME OVER for me.

Apreciado "Fantasma". Creo que antes de nada deberías limpiar de virus y enlaces peligrosos tus accesos a descarga del Mod.

I reverted the change, but you'll need to wait one more week before I release the free version.

Ren'Py 8.4 was upgraded to Python 3.12, which likely explains the increased system requirements. This particular game doesn't really benefit from the update, but your current setup is quite outdated. Honestly, switching to Linux and running Windows apps through Wine might be a better long-term solution. Sooner or later, more developers will move to newer Ren'Py versions, and most engines will eventually drop support for older systems as well.

hello kmmgames

Thanks for the info, and yes, a switch to a new PC with Windows 11 Pro is already being planned.

You're the first developer here to even respond to this notice, thank you very much for that. I've currently moved 9 games that require Windows 10 to a separate directory and will perhaps look at them again at another time.

According to the Ren'Py release list, Ren'Py 8.3.7 and Ren'Py 7.8.7 weren't released until March 2025.
Ren'Py 8.4.0 didn't come out until July 2025.
Why developers have to update projects that have been running since 2022 or 2023 to this version now is beyond me, and I certainly won't support developers who react so rashly, no matter how interesting their game may be.
Fortunately, I still have enough alternatives to keep me entertained for a few weeks.
