I thought that was quite out of the left field as well, until I stopped and looked who reacted how. Eva is clearly telling us subconsciously to side with certain characters and antagonize others. The blatant bigotry of Wade in a chapter where he can be cuckolded is a little... well, on the nose.
As player, you are given a choice to shape your Ian in a route you desire. You can either make him go all JK Rowling, or keep him in nice guy territory.
More I think about that scene, the more I like the structure. That convo tells you about the characters. Alison's reaction in particular is extremely telling.
