Since they know each other from way back, he's probably got info on Seymour and there'll be a route where he'll help turn both the town around (coffee shop, bar, ect) and his life around before the end - probably as a more moral businessman, if I were to guess. I assume it was Seymour who screwed him over and wrecked his life in some way.

I mean it always depends on if you or he actually insert yourself and your mindset into the story or just play with the dolls given to you and watch the story play out in different scenarios that are in your mind with the tools that creator provided.
When i discovered these games in 2017 i was more like okay i will insert myself there but since then i don't give a fuck and personally enjoy a lot more games and how Devs decided to present them to me.
I actually find it hilarious when there are some people on this forum that have mental breakdowns because they self insert a tad too much.

You either exert agency in giving the MC you control her/his best shot,
in which case, having your own MC lose to give your other MC the jerk rebound option,
does not sound actually very sound to me, exactly because all Lena is doing all the time
is fending off everyone throwing themselves at her ... so to have her go home with the bully,
seems like giving up .. or seymour or any other ex who demeans her in front of others and

I personally play these type of tag games for the corruption and debauchery if possible, theres a lot more games based on romance and love so when i have the tools to make my controlled characters go crazy corruption path i go for it.
And actually both GGGB and ORS are doing the spicy corruption paths really interesting so you can have your "dolls" swim in it if you want.
But yeah depends on a person, one like to be that MC 100% and others just treat characters like characters that they can control and pretty much being a god.
